mommy25
I don't know what to do with my 7th grader regarding math. She is currently using Teaching Textbooks and is just not getting it. She just went through the entire fractions section and is starting decimals but still does not understand fractions. And this is at the 6th grade level. This is very upsetting to her because she knows she is 'behind' a level. I just tested her on the Math u See website and she past Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta. She got most of the Epsilon section wrong and didn't even attempt the Zeta section. One thing that bothers me about Math U See is that she will have to wait until she finishes the Epsilom level to even be introduced to decimals and percents in the Zeta level...I don't want her to get furthur behind! Is there any other math programs you would recommend? I think I also need to stop worrying about what 'grade level' she is in and start worrying about whether she is getting the concepts. I would appreciate any suggestions....
Starr
I agree with working at her level and not worrying about grade level. I've finally gotten this into my head with my 7th grader. They have 2 years until high school. :) I used the 6th grade Scott Foresman but didn't get the teachers manual so I didn't have an answer key. It works for us but I also understand math well. Does she need to be taught a different way or go over it again with more practice?
Terri NS
How about getting some of the "Key to ..." series. I thought my dd could use more work with fractions so I ordered these and we took a break from our regular curriculum and worked through beginning with book 1 (fractions). I liked it so much I went back and bought the percents and metric and use them once a week or so. I also like that they are inexpensive. I haven't used either Math U See or Teaching Textbooks so can't comment on this.
njosanders
I started sitting and working through each problem, re looking at the lecture if we needed to and just tutoring her. Within a month she started telling me to go that she didn't need me and she is making huge improvements. We too are using TT 7. We came out of Saxon totally confused. Vicki
I love the "Key to....." series. I've used all of them to reinforce or give more practice on concepts we are learning. My ds is working through percents and algebra right now. They are inexpensive and break concepts down into small bites so they are not overwhelming. We also use Teaching Textbooks. We genaerally read through the lesson with the DVD, then watch the practice problems and finally they do the lesson. I then grade the lesson and they go back and watch each problem that they missed. If they missed too many they watch each problem they missed and then redo the whole lesson. If they don't do all the steps with each lesson it shows, they miss more problems. You could try the "Keys to..." series for a couple of months and then try Teaching Textbooks again. Sometimes all they need is a little more time. I think it is a good idea to not worry about what level they are at, but just concentrate on them getting the concepts. God bless, Vicki
