I'm at 2dd's.  the boys are sick with colds, both have seen the doctor (one has an ear infection, the other to check for an ear infection.).  Needless to say, we three adults now have it.  (all after the boys got sick).

dsil has said he's so miserable, he's going to get tested for covid (he went back to bed.  1gs was up most of the night screaming.  He's now sleeping.).  dd and I are supposed to fly out on friday . . . . if dsil is positive, we will definitely get tested.

they've had moderna, I had pfizer.   Yes, I have a sore throat, but not any worse than I have had before with URIs.  (I also have EBV, and when it flares, the 'cold symptoms' are always the same.)

anything in the meantime?

In light of the CDC announcement about transmission and need for masking, I think you should definitely get covid testing before your flight and consider delaying your flight until you are well.

I'm clearly behind. Can you please link this?

I would test now, especially because you may need a second round of tests in a couple days.  Our test kit, Binax brand, specifies that you need to test again in a few days due to false negatives.

FWIW, kids here are sick, too.  URI for DD, sinus infection.  DS middle ear infection and heading into URI.  Both are responding to abx. I feel pretty confident it’s not Covid.

We immediately used an at home rapid Covid test (Binax), and got negative results.  Kids are responding to abx, plus we tested again in a few days and got second negatives. I feel fairly certain we are not dealing with Covid, but we have postponed elder care helpers and cleaning help as I don’t want to pass on any germs at this point.  For those workers, if they get sick - even with non-Covid - they will have to stay out of work and then go through finding out if *they* have Covid and satisfying their other clients that it’s not. So, we will just deal.

Whatever you do, I hope everyone feels better soon!

None of the kids were tested for Covid?   Honestly that is our first step when a kid is sick now.  I would be surprised if the doc didn't do that.

Agreed/ Childcare sent my daughter home with a sore throat yesterday and the doctors tested her. We're waiting for results so everyone is home today for now.

Is there a reason that you wouldn't get tested now? Why wait?

For reference,  I  test every week before seeing my mum.

tbh: I don't think it is, I think it's just a cold. 2dd - pharmacist, thinks it's just a cold.

adults have all been vax'd with moderna/pfizer.

If dsil is positive (he tested this morning), the rest of us would get tested.

- dd said he's  frequently "miserable" "the world is going to end" whenever he's sick. (he has an autoimmune illness.)  They've been married for six years.  He has not been getting very much sleep.  I know lack of sleep adversely affects me. It will often trigger an EBV flare.

Both boys have been into the dr, very typical cold symptoms.  snotty noses, some coughing. very low to no fever.  The one with the ear infection is doing much better since starting antibiotics.  The dr didn't test them.

I have a compromised immune system - I have normal "mild" ebv flare symptoms.   If I had covid - I guarantee I'd be very ill.

It really doesn't work like that 😞 . Lots of COVID presents like a mild cold. You should test and make sure. Plenty of places offer rapid tests now 🙂 .

Think about how you'd feel if you spread it. And rapid tests aren't the "all the way up your nose" variety, either! You can get one at CVS.

Gently, please, please test before flying, even if DSIL is negative. It would be possible for him to have a cold and you to have COVID. I can't imagine not testing in this scenario. But...the path you are currently choosing definitely illustrates why we aren't out of this pandemic yet.

That is nuts.  Sorry but we are in a pandemic.  That is the first thing to do.  My 3 youngest were sick a week or 2 ago.  In normal times I wouldn't have done anything other than rest, fluids, some meds.  But because of Covid we tested, and retested a few times.  I would have wanted to let anyone know if they were positive because they had been around others.

I don't think there are any guarantee with Covid.  I don't think you are going to know if you have it or not unless you test and retest.  Those kids need to be tested and so do you.  Lots of people report just having cold symptoms when they have covid.  And you might only have some mild symptoms because you are vaccinated.   It is easy to find a place to do a rapid test.

I mean, if you can catch a cold you can catch COVID. I’d assume the latter is actually much more likely right now.

Echoing everyone else—please get tested at least twice before getting on a plane or possibly exposing anyone else. No one wants your cold right now either, even that is what you have. Every person who has cold symptoms has to assume it’s COVID, which means you’re interrupting their life by requiring them to get tested, take time off work, isolate, etc. Every.single.exposed person.

All of you need to be tested. Today.

The Binax test is available at regular pharmacies.  It’s about $20 for two tests. The swab is easy, not the brain scratching type, and the whole process takes maybe 17 minutes.  It’s ridiculously easy, though I admit that we bribed our 10 yr old with a new stuffie because she was nervous. It was no biggie, once she did it though.

Why wouldn’t you test before getting on a flight, in a pandemic?  We know vaccinated people can still spread it, symptomatic or not. Even if it’s just a regular cold, passing that on to any passengers creates this same quandary for them (“Is it Covid?  Can I go to this meeting on this business trip or do I need to quarantine in my hotel?  I’m on vacation, does this mean I can’t go have fun till I get tested?”). It’s up to you, I just know that as the wife of someone who has to fly for business, I greatly appreciate people testing before flying, if they are around someone who is ill.

I hope your munchkins feel better soon.  It’s no fun to be sick in the summer!  And I hope you are taking your Vit D or whatever you need to take to stay healthy.  No Covid for you, ok?

Zinc is a known anti-viral . . . not making any wildly specific covid claims or anything, just throwing out there that it likely won't hurt, regardless of WHAT you've got going on. (For children, there are citrus-flavored zinc lozenges, too, if that's a useful idea.)

You can't guarantee you'd be super ill if you had covid, and then extrapolate that whatever you have now means it's not covid. It doesn't work that way.

I have a friend who's a transplant patient on heavy duty immune suppressants. She had asymptomatic covid. How?! Don't know, but she did.

Get tested and don't assume you're in the clear.

Get tested before you get on the plane.  If it is covid, you may have mild symptoms, but you could pass it to someone else.   Covid looked like a cold for most (3/5) of my family.  Runny nose, slightly sore throat the first day, etc.  It was simply back muscle cramps and 99.5/100 temp for me.  My husband got it last and worst (ending up in the hospital).  Truly, testing is soooo easy and free.  Appointments can be made at CVS or Walgreens online.

I have a friend who just got over Covid. She was fully immunized, tested just out of precaution, and was astonished when it came back positive. She mainly had a sore throat. Then a few days later, she had a fever for about 24 hours. Then felt better by the time she got her results back.

You can definitely have Covid if you just have a slight sore throat. You should test.

Given how much more contagious this delta variant is, I strongly encourage getting tested, especially because you have a sore throat.

Please. Two of my kids, my niece, and our best family friends all have Covid because of someone thinking it was “just a cold”.

My daughter tested negative on her first pcr test despite showing symptoms and having a known exposure. Thankfully we kept her away from people she was retested again the next day. She only had symptoms for a total of 2 days and was still positive 8 days later. Her Covid looked completely different than mine did. It also looked different than her brother’s currently does.

@gardenmom5, I truly hope you will get tested before flying. We're in the middle of a pandemic. None of us who are the least bit sick can know with any certainty at all that it's not Covid. That's just not rational thinking. Getting tested is the basic human decency thing to do.

You have to attest that you have not had any symptoms of covid before you get on a plane. Even though you don’t think it’s covid, you HAVE had symptoms of covid in the 10 days before your flight.

Just throwing this out there…a friend's fully vaccinated MIL has a breakthrough case of COVID. It presented as a sinus infection.

Everyone really, truly needs to get tested for any potential symptom or this is never going away.

Everyone really does need to get tested right now.

But I don't think "this" is going away.

It may never go away, but it doesn't have to be as catastrophic as it is currently.

It's almost certainly going to be endemic, but then it has looked that way for a while. But it can be endemic and overwhelming and endemic and not overwhelming. That depends mostly on vaccine uptake and drug development, I think.

I am also still holding out hope it mutates to something less virulent eventually. Right now, unfortunately, the evolutionary pressure is mostly for it to evolve to be more transmissible, I think. But perhaps now that it's excellent at being transmissible, it'll work on being less virulent, since that'll keep people more ambulatory and more able to spread? 😉 Here's hoping.
