I suppose it'd be a loss of face to do what he needs to do to save the relationship, and later, when she's gone, he can pretend he never had kids or something. I dunno, but none of the likely results are going to see him being doted upon ever again, which is what he wants. It's very peculiar. There are a lot of reasons humans will sacrifice their own well being, but destroying the easiest ways to have your needs met makes no sense to me.
