Teaching3bears Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 It is salad dressing (probably oil, vinegar, lemon juice, herbs and spices) from Greek take-out. It came in a plastic take-out container and I put it in a glass jar. I am not good at telling from smelling or tasting, especially when it has a strong taste like vinegar already. It is 3-6 months old in the fridge and I haven't opened the jar in a couple of months. Should I keep it or throw it out? If I throw it out and want to keep the jar, should I pour it down the kitchen sink or might that create a blockage? Quote
Innisfree Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 (edited) Throw it out. I'd pour it on the compost pile. Or if you don't have one, then on some absorbent stuff like napkins or paper towels in the plastic trash bag. Edited July 8, 2021 by Innisfree 2 Quote

When you throw it out (and yes, you must!) don't pour it down the drain! You should never put fats/oils down the drain. I save old plastic ziploc bags to use for things like this...put it in the bag, you can add some paper towels if there's a lot of oil, and put it in the trash. 1 Quote
Pawz4me Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 Throw it out. I keep a stash of bags (bread bags, Ziploc bags that can't be washed and used again, etc.) as well as plastic containers (yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) for throwing out stuff like that. 2 Quote
Teaching3bears Posted July 8, 2021 Author Posted July 8, 2021 Thanks! It's unanimous so I threw it out. It is very yummy when it's fresh. How long do you think it would last in the fridge? And so many ideas for getting rid of it. Why could I not think of any myself? 1 Quote
Tanaqui Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 I freeze all oils before throwing them out. They go into the trash frozen and if they thaw before the truck gets here it's no longer my problem and I don't care. Too late for you now, but.... Quote
JFSinIL Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 Any condiment that has not been used in a few months does not deserve to hang onto my limited fridge space, is my motto. Quote
kristin0713 Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 (edited) I would not keep any take out food for more than a few days. With something like salad dressing that they gave you in a plastic container, you don't know how old it was in the first place. For any other condiments that I buy at the store, I go by the expiration dates and whether it says to use within a certain amount of time after opening. I probably throw out too much, but I don't take chances with food. I usually write the date on things like a jar of salsa or pasta sauce in case a lot of time goes by and I don't remember when I opened it. If there is no time frame indicated, I will keep salsa for about a month but no more than that. I think most pasta sauce that I buy says to use within 7-10 days. J-rap Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 I keep opened grocery store-bought salad dressing in a bottle for up to a year sometimes. The vinegar keeps it safe. But I don't know what all is in a take-out restaurant dressing, so I'd probably toss it. 1 Quote
fairfarmhand Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 I keep old sour cream containers for this kind of thing. Quote
Tap Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 Due to cross contamination alone, I would not keep restaurant condiments. You have no idea how that dressing was made, stored or handled (by many, many staff). Quote
