Social Studies resource?

Recommended Posts

Helping a family transition from homeschooling to public school. They are looking for a social studies curriculum for their 3rd grader. They don't want a pure history curriculum like SOTW or HQ. They will be reading historical fiction and such but want a textbook spine with history topics, geography, culture, communities etc. Like old school social studies textbooks. I've searched the internet a bit but can't find anything that is secular and aimed at elementary age kids. Anyone have any suggestions I can pass along?

I second Scott Foresman for secular and mainstream America-focused social studies. My son's private school used it, and I own a copy for home.  Here is Grade 3:

Also secular and mainstream, and including a bit more world geography (e.g. hot springs in New Zealand)  Evan-Moor has a full color workbook in their "Skill Sharpeners" series, which we also own.  We do a page daily, I like the bite-sized articles.  Pages are perforated.  You can preview all or most of the pages online:

Maybe a subscription to Social Studies Weekly?

That link allows for checking out samples of different grade levels. Grade 3 has a lot of focus on "community" as well as national symbols, holidays, monuments, etc. Grade 4 has a lot of focus on Government/Civics and Economics. Both also include some History and Geography.
