My mom is used to sleeping on a thin topper on a wooden board but her health has changed and needs a mattress now.

It needs to be super firm given that she is used to the above. She can't go to the local store to test mattresses.

Anyone have something like this?

TIA

The firmest spring mattress at Mattress Firm doesn’t stay firm. Tempurpedic is firmer than the spring mattresses they have but we didn’t want to spend that much on the thickest Tempurpedic.

When we were first married, we slept in sleeping bags on a hardwood floor, and that's when I realized all my back problems were caused by not sleeping on a firm enough mattress.  (We must've had something to soften it a big underneath -- maybe a folded blanket or something.)  Since then, I've always been really picky.

We bought a Saatva mattress about 4-5 years ago which has been great.  We got the Classic firm.  Not the "luxury firm" -- just "firm".  That's the firmest one they have.   They have different lines now, all more expensive than the Classic, but they still have the Classic.

I think you can try it for 6 months and return it for $99 if you decide you don't like it.

I noticed that the Saatva mattress mentioned in the Consumer Reports link Tina sent is referring to the "luxury firm" (of one of Saatva's other mattress lines, but I assume the firmness is similar).  But note that the "luxury firm" is really considered medium, not firm.  (That's why we got the "firm.")

ETA:  All their business is done online/mail.  They don't sell it at any stores.

Thanks for the recommendations. I didn't even realize mattresses could cost thousands. I've been an IKEA mattress buyer for quite time. The most recent purchase was from Amazon and it's a trifold mattress. The price difference is making me think maybe I need to reconsider this in the long term. I've emailed a couple of the companies listed here to see if they can give me some ideas on what's best for an older person with hip issues.
