Slache Posted June 23, 2021 Posted June 23, 2021 I want to rent a cabin in September maybe less than 2 hours from San Antonio. I started a thread about Big Bend awhile back but it was decided we should not go with little people. I got some good responses and I'm leaning towards Garner State Park, but the pass system is complicated and even if we stayed near by we would only be able to spend half the day at the park. Where should I go? I want stars. Quote
TexasProud Posted June 23, 2021 Posted June 23, 2021 Not near San Antonio, but I would recommend Davis State Park and the somewhat nearby McDonald Observatory. 1 Quote
Tree Frog Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 Lost Maples is about an hour and a half from San Antonio. It's one of my kids favorite places to hike. 1 Quote
Clear Creek Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 Foxfire cabins near Lost Maples. We have stayed there twice, ten years between visits, and enjoyed it both times. It is within driving distance of Garner State Park if you want to spend an afternoon there. The cabins have all the necessities, it is on a river so you can swim and fish, and there are laundry facilities on-site. 1 Quote

chiguirre Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 How about the George Observatory in Brazos Bend State Park? The park has cabins and campsites and there are educational programs at the observatory. 1 Quote

Hi Slache, We went to the McDonald Observatory the first year we homeschooled. The boys were 2nd and 4th at the time. ( They are 24 and 26 now. Where did the time go?) We were doing astronomy for science, so I booked one of the Star Parties. It was fantastic. They had some stuff like had people stand where Mars would be, Venus, etc. to see scale. We sat outside and talked about what they saw. Then they had telescopes set up all over everywhere, some very substantial one in small buildings as well and the kids went inside and got to look through them. They had some great conversations with the people there who were knowledgeable and friendly. They were impressed with how much the kids knew. Anyway, it was a great experience. 1 1 Quote

When we went there were no tv's or internet or anything. I don't know if they have modernized it. I kinda hope not. But it is a cool place to stay. 1 Quote
catz Posted June 24, 2021 Posted June 24, 2021 This is WAY too far for you, but I'm throwing it out there in case anyone following along is looking for Texas destinations. We rented a beautiful stone cabin in Palo Duro Canyon State Park (just south of Amarillo) a number of years back and had a fabulous time! Great park! They had a great junior ranger program too. 1 1 Quote

I don't want to drive that far. I have a west Texas road trip planned in a few years and we will go here then. 46 minutes ago, FuzzyCatz said: This is WAY too far for you, but I'm throwing it out there in case anyone following along is looking for Texas destinations. We plan to go to Colorado in a year or so and this is perfect! Thanks. 1 Quote
