We are having a BBQ in our backyard with my side of the family.  My parents, brother and his family, sister and her family are all coming.  We are all now fully vaccinated and comfortable to get together.  I am very excited about it.  My mom has been having some health problems, so I want to get to spend time with her while I can.

In the evening we will be sitting in our yard watching the neighborhood fireworks.  Our area goes all out.  Some of the neighbors spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on fireworks.  We will buy some to set off as well.

dh has 4 days off and two of those days will be spent working at my parents' house. That weekend is going to be the hardest work of the whole project, replacing an exterior sliding door.  Actual July 4th, most likely going to dh's aunt's house for a small gathering or just enjoying our swimming pool and have a bbq.

what are you doing?

I'll be trying to keep my horses calm while our neighbors up the road set off fireworks. This is their vacation home, and every time they are out here, they are either setting off fireworks or shooting guns nonstop. Sometimes both. I don't mind run-of-the-mill fireworks noise, but the ones they set off literally sound like cannon fire and make my horses panic.

We throw two parties a year that all are welcome to: New Year's Eve and the 4th of July.

What time should we be there, and what can we bring?  😊

No plans yet, aack.

@mommyoffive what are your plans?

We will be hanging out at home and glaring in the direction of the illegal fireworks nearby. But we have a family member visiting this week, which is the first in a very long time.

Just the 3 of us will be here. The menu is grilled burgers and smoked sausage, twice baked potatoes, deviled eggs, stuffed jalapenos with bacon, and homemade ice cream. We will probably take Fil a plate-he is on hospice and I know he would enjoy (he is still able to eat.)

Oh, your poor horses.  That just makes me so sad for them.

I am trying to figure something fun out.   Most likely staying home and being super annoyed by all my neighbors setting off illegal fireworks.  This year it is even more dangerous in a severe drought.  Last year a neighbor shot one into our house.    I hate 4th of July because of my neighbors.  I always want to be far away this time of year and never am.  I am hoping our puppy doesn't react to the fireworks, but I bet she will.   I know our chickens will be totally freaked out.

They shot one into your house?!  Thank goodness you still have a house.  Yikes.

Yes, we will likely be home and annoyed at the crazy neighbors with giant fireworks.  We live on a cul de sac, so they all come down and shoot them off in front of our house, instead of doing it in front of their own.  Grrrrr.  The clean up takes weeks.  And we end up with debris on our roof.  I have such anxiety that we try to go out somewhere, but we will likely stay home to be with my mom.  Last year the fireworks triggered her anxiety and dementia - she was a mess. So this year I will try to keep her calm, but imagine it will be a bit like caring for horses and skittish dogs.  Our dogs just cower in their crates. (Sadly. it’s so stressful for animals!).

We don't plan on doing anything other than hanging out at home. Thankfully our close neighbors are all sane and mannerly people, but I'm sure there will be fireworks in the distance. One of my dogs (not avatar dog) is noise phobic. I have a standing prescription for Trazadone for her, and I guess I'll medicate her just in case. We'll hope for rain since we need it anyway.

We don't go anywhere on holiday weekends, just hang out and try to have a special meal. There are usually fireworks displays visible from our house, and some neighbors will be shooting them off into the late hours.  If anything we will try to get some hiking in, unless it's too hot/humid for us!

We usually make a float for our small-town parade.  We're running real late this year, but expect to pull it off at the last minute.

Yep.  We got lucky it didn't break the window, do any damage to the house, start the roof or chicken coop on fire.  🙂  Seriously.  It is nuts.  We live on tiny little lots, you should not be setting off fireworks in your backyard in that situation.

Oh your poor mom.
