regentrude
I am looking for a word for the little turret with slated sides on top of the entrance gable that houses the bell. It's not a tower or a steeple. Would this be a belfry? Is there another word? Thanks
mellifera33
I might call it a cupola.
Wishes
Narthex. NM. Looking at the building below it. I would say belfry too. Edited June 12, 2021 by Wishes

LucyStoner
I think belfry is the right word- in that picture, it appears to be just large enough for the bell itself and doesn't serve any other purpose.
prairiewindmomma
Yes, it’s a belfry. A belfry is a structure that houses the bell, and can be either free standing or surmounted on the narthex as shown.
Elfknitter.#
#teamcupola based on some of the background and pictures from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupola. Belfries seem taller.
Farrar
I vote belfry, though I'm not totally sure that's right. A cupola is round. We call the rowhouses with round dunce caps here cupolas. A narthex is the little building space underneath the belfry. So the entrance would be the narthex.
Selkie
Cupola. Lots of barns around here have cupolas that look like that.
Selkie
19 minutes ago, Seasider too said: I think of cupolas as nonfunctional. Belfries, on the other hand, house bells. And bats. Cupolas are functional - they improve ventilation. I think this one is called a bell tower cupola. I found out that the Amish who built my horse barns also build custom cupolas, which sometimes include bells.
