Paint Peeps

So I thought I still had the paint color for my bedroom. We’re mid remodel and I want the master bathroom to match the bedroom and we moved the door so one wall in the bedroom needs repainted. 
 

i bought a gallon of Behr Sleepy Blue, a SW color. Got home and it’s close, but nope - see below. My other, “I think I remember...” guess is Silver Lake. Is there any way to see the “makeup” of the gallon so I can ask them to tweak it? Do they do that? I got it at HD if that matters.

I don’t think so, unless you have a 2x2” sample somewhere you can take in. Maybe send a kid for a swatch of silver lake & similar colors to compare?

Oh, I think there’s an app where you can take a picture and it will guess your paint color.

Whether they can modify it to "close enough" depends to some degree on what base paint they used in each color.  Some bases start pure white, whether others start in varying shades of gray.  For example, most "one coat" paints use a grayish base.  That is what lets the single coat cover everything.  If the paint you want to doctor to another color has too much gray to start, no chance.

If the base is OK, they can go darker or they can add color, but the ratios have to match.  So if there is 3 squirts blue to 4 squirts gray, and you already have 5 squirts of gray, it's going to come out more saturated in color, even if they can do the math to figure out and/or implement the ratios. 

Sometimes they will take back the "bad color" at half price or something and sell it as primer for someone else.  I have a few mistake-quarts that I use as primer when it works out that I am covering an obnoxious color that is going to take more than 2 coats anyway.  Final coat paint is not as cheap as primer...but if you already own the mistake-paint, then it is cheaper to just use it.

I think this is the solution - just grab a sample of Silver Lake and see if it is a match. I’ll use the Sleepy Blue in the new bathrooms and hope Silver Lake is a match. I really don’t want to have to repaint the bathroom.

You can take a sample of the color you want and take your existing gallon back to Home Depot. Home Depot can color match your sample and then try to tweak formulas if it’s possible based on the colors used. SW uses completely different dyes and formulas than HD, so you can’t directly compare formulas.
