saraha Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Researching is almost like a full time job, and I’m finding a lot of sites just copying each other’s vague tips, like almost verbatim. My fil will not read a whole book (although I ordered the 36 hour day for dh and I) so I thought I would print out things about caring for a loved one that could be shorter reads and put together like a packet for him. He needs concrete ideas. It seems like many boardies here have had to help loved ones through the dementia journey and I was hoping you might have some website recommendations. thanks in advance! Spryte Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 The 36 Hour Day is one of those books your FIL could just flip through, wouldn’t need to be a cover to cover read. We spent some time with a palliative care nurse today, and we ended up on a tangent about talking to dementia patients. She said to remember that correcting someone, or constantly trying to remind them of things, can make things deteriorate - and to watch their body language. She suggested asking a lot of questions. So when someone says, “I want to go home” … ask about home and what they remember about it. She was happy that we’d read the 36 Hour Day, and also recommended Validation Therapy by Naomi Feil. Not sure that helps. It’s not easy. 3 Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 The 5 R’s I linked to in the other thread? I would turn that into a print off to put on the fridge. 1 Quote
speed.cleaner Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 (edited) Sorry to hear of your predicament. I found the Dementia Australia website helpful when navigating our family experience while Dad was living with dementia. The Help Sheets, particularly those about Caring for Someone with Dementia were useful. Edited June 8, 2021 by speed.cleaner typo 2 Quote
