Hi,

My son will be in 3rd grade in the upcoming school year(Aug 2021).I wanted to teach him 3rd grade Math concepts during summer. What textbook is best to begin with? My son’s school uses Pearson Math but I don’t want to follow the same.Looking for some interesting ways to teach the concepts that involves critical thinking too.

Thanks

Some options....

Singapore Math (might be difficult to jump in at 3rd grade if you and your child aren't familiar with the teaching style)

Mathematical Reasoning (from Critical Thinking Press)

Beast Academy, as was mentioned ( You could start at level 2 or 3 or just do the online version, the comic book style appeals to most boys)

Math Mammoth (worktext written to the student)

MEP (free, but you will need to look through the materials thoroughly to get the most out of it)

How about using summer to introduce multiplication and get a jump on learning his times tables with a game-based program like Kate Snow's Multiplication Facts that Stick

That will be a key part of his schoolwork this year and in my experience, kids who haven't learned the facts to rock-solid automaticity begin to struggle with later problems (multi-digit multiplication, division, fractions, ratios, percentages...).  Too much brain power needed for the harder stuff is being diverted to trying to figure out 9x6. (She also has programs for addition, subtraction and division facts if those are a better fit for your child's current skills.)

I think Beast Academy is the fun one of those. That's why I suggested it 🙂 . They also have stuff online.

He might enjoy Miquon.  They're cheap books and go through ideas in a different order than Pearson.  Or, for a much lighter program, Math Adventures books, This Is Not A Math Book, Math Scribbles, or Mathmania.

If you teach him all the concepts now he will be sitting in maths all year thinking "I already know this".  Unless he really wants to do it I would either do something like "multiplication facts that stick" or maths storybook and games of projects.
