Jenny in Florida Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Actual request up front: Does anyone know of salon brand/operator/affiliate other than Aveda that is based on vegan/cruelty-free products? Background: With our recent move, I wanted to establish myself with a hair salon closer to the new house. It also seemed like the right time to move on from where I had been going. Getting my hair professionally cut and colored (purple) is one of the few indulgent things I do for myself. For a good couple of years, those appointments were my equivalent of spa visits in terms of relaxation and pampering, but the stylist I had loved left, and I hadn't really clicked with anyone else. When we were preparing to move, I located an Aveda salon just a few miles from the new house. However, I have spent the last two days exchanging emails with them regarding scheduling and have gotten so frustrated that I told them to forget it. (In a nutshell: They wanted tons of information up front about my color, including photos, which I provided, then said that I would need to come in for a consultation with the colorist separately from doing the cut and then do the actual color in a different appointment. Then they tried to schedule me during the day after I said I wasn't available until after work, even after I said we could skip the color for now and just do the trim . . . There was more, but that is the gist.) The fact remains, though, that I absolutely need my hair cut very soon. It's driving me crazy, and I hate even looking at myself on Zoom. There is no other Aveda salon in the immediate area. I could go back to the one I was going to, but it would be a half-hour drive each way to get there, and I was ready to move on even before the move. The next closest Aveda salon, which is still farther than I would really want to drive on a regular basis, is part of the same group as the local salon that is driving me crazy with scheduling. So, I'm looking for alternatives. Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 I can type in “vegan salon” into my Google search bar, and I pull up a handful of places in my area. They are not Aveda based, but in the details it explains how they are cruelty free, etc. I live in a vegan Mecca, though, so ymmv. Quote
catz Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 I don't know if there is another widespread chain quite like Aveda. But we are also in a major metro and I can find a number of independent locally owned salons that advertise that. So you might want to post on your local groups/forums for your new neighborhood if you have those. Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Also, fwiw, purple is really hard to do well, especially with vegan colors. If you are within an hour of your old home, I would be inclined to drive back. Seriously. Quote

As I said, the stylist I really liked at the old place has moved on (selling real estate now) and I haven't found anyone else at that salon that does as good a job with cutting my hair. The last guy I had really didn't listen to me and did what he wanted, then insisted on taking pictures for his portfolio. So, I'm not super motivated to make the drive there and back. Quote

Yeah, I've tried hitting Google with every variation I can dream up of "vegan hair salon," "cruelty-free salon," etc. No luck. It pulls up all of the Aveda salons in the metro area and references to a few individual stylists who are no closer to me than the old salon. Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 You might try going to the Davines website and then using the Salon locator feature. I will keep researching. Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Hempz is another shampoo/product brand I am seeing often, but most vegan salons here aren’t listing on their websites what they use. Those are also much more reasonable in price. Quote

There is one small, independent Davines salon not far from me. Unfortunately, I can't verify that their products are cruelty free:https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/brands/davines/ It's a good lead, though. Quote
