English Class Recommendations

Hello all,

 

I am beginning to sign up for next year’s classes and am struggling to find an English class. I am going to be a senior this fall and am thinking of majoring in a STEM related field. I am looking for a solid high school level course that will help prepare me for college, but am reluctant to choose an AP class as I have a large course load next year. Does anyone happen to have any English recommendations?

I have used the Saxon Grammar and Writing language arts curriculum and have completed an academic writing course as well as an English Literature and Composition course from Aim Academy. I would like to become more confident in my writing skills and be able to write more easily and effectively as I often find the process of constructing essays to be extraordinarily difficult and time consuming. I am hoping to find a course that challenges me and helps me grow as a writer, but is not too overwhelming.

My daughter took this class in high school and grew a lot as a writer that year. She really loved the teacher. It covered a lot of basics and wasn’t too overwhelming.

It sounds like you would like to focus more on writing than on the literature end.  

Would you prefer a live class? Or could you do something asynchronous like Lantern English or Write at Home where you are paired up with a writing coach?

Would you like to cover research paper writing?

I am more focused on the writing aspect; however, I would also like a class that has a literature exponent. I have had some experience with research writing so it is not a deal breaker if it is not included in the class as long as there is other essay writing practice. I would prefer a live class, but would be open to an asynchronous class if the teacher provides constructive and meaningful feedback. I haven't heard of Lantern English or Write at Home before so I will be sure to check those out. Thanks!

KristenHeart:

I teach a course that may provide what you're seeking. It's called Logical Communication.

Also, if it turns out that what I teach is a fit with your needs, I'm open to discussing a partial scholarship.

A few details about this class:

  • Logical Communication is a year-long online course, and it's all live interaction (not asynchronous).
  • The course emphasizes logical progression of ideas, i.e., the skeletal structure that underlies any great essay — hence the title of the course.
  • In addition to writing their own essays, my students read closely and discuss at length more than forty essays by great writers. (I've always found it crazy that we ask students to write essays before they've actually read any.) 
  • I teach a process for getting started quickly and moving through the stages & decisions that will have you producing a first draft in record time.
  • I teach tools for revising & editing your work that can transform your draft into a smooth, polished read.

You could try a class at The Potter's School. They have a lot of lit/comp classes for 10th-12th grades.  TPS isn't going to be for everyone. They are a Christian group, and unapologetically so.  Also, they have a specific format they look for with essays.  However, we have had a good experience the past two years with them with lower level classes. They provide good input on the essays. And they do provide live classes.

Looks like everyone else has already done a great job of suggesting a variety of classes up-thread! 😄 

A few other ideas to consider:

Cindy Lange at Integritas Academy, either of these:
- Level II-B Literature & Composition for Underclassmen (gr. 9-10, but an inexperienced writer older student could request to enroll)
- Level III-B Literature & Composition for Upperclassmen (gr. 11-12)

Christine Proctor at Blue Tent:
- Honors English Literature & Composition 1 (gr. 9 and up)
- Honors English Literature & Composition 2 (gr. 10 and up)

Thank you! I will be sure to look into those options. Also, I am considering taking Christine Proctor's English Literature and Composition class but have heard that it is quite demanding and that the Moodle website isn't as enjoyable to use as Canvas. Do you know anyone who has taken any of her classes or have any thoughts?

Yes, I know! Outsourcing is expensive, esp. to get a high quality class. 

I always made our own English credits and didn't outsource, so I have no personal experience. But I suggested both of those instructors because people on these boards always praise them (like @Bootsie recommendation above).


As a side note: I don't think some of the people at my homeschool co-op have ANY idea of just what a great deal they get with the English classes I offer... I need to start sending them to look at  these online class providers for a reality check. 😉 :laugh:
