cintinative Posted May 14, 2021 Posted May 14, 2021 We have done most, but not all, of our dissections this year and I am confused about the dissection specimen quality. Our specimens (from Home Science Tools) tend to have almost no color variation of internal organs. This makes identification of structures more difficult. We watch videos on YouTube to understand the method for the dissection (before we do it ourselves) and pretty much always the specimens used by the bio teacher, etc. on YouTube are much better, structures can be identified, etc. Why is this? Are the YouTubers using unpreserved specimens? (They did mention preservation liquid, so I doubt it?) Do we just have cruddy specimens? Or is this pretty much the norm? The fish we have to dissect tomorrow looks awful! I am tempted to pick up a fish from a market instead. LOL! Quote
Wheres Toto Posted May 14, 2021 Posted May 14, 2021 You have to get the more expensive specimens that are "double injected" to have the nice different colors. In those, they remove the fluids and replace them with colored latex, usually some things in red and some in blue. The ones that are not injected can be quite a bit cheaper but it is harder to distinguish some of the parts. I've used both and the dissection guides from HST are very helpful with the non-injected ones. 4 Quote
