Anyone make their own AP Gov't course?

Recommended Posts

I will be the annoying person who can't answer your original question, but will offer info tangentially related to your question... 😉😂

1. It is fine to make your own AP course; however, to be able to call it "AP" in the course title on the transcript, you have to submit your syllabus to College Board and have it approved.

2. If not jumping that hoop, then you list the course on the transcript without "AP" in the title, but add a note that that the course was followed by an AP exam. Examples:

Social Sciences
course . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . credit . . . grade
American Government, with AP test . . . . . 1.0 . . . . . X
Human Geography, with AP test . . . . . . . . 1.0 . . . . . X
History: United States, with AP test . . . . . .1.0 . . . . . X
History: Ancient World . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.0 . . . . . X
History: 20th Century World . . . . . . . . . . .1.0 . . . . . X
Economics  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.5 . . . . . X
total Social Science credits / GPA . . . . . . . . .5.5    /    X.XX

or

Social Sciences
course . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  credit . . . grade
American Government 1  . . . . . 1.0 . . . . . X
Human Geography 1  . . . . . . . . 1.0 . . . . . X
History: United States 1 . . . . . . 1.0 . . . . . X
History: Ancient World 2 . . . . . .1.0 . . . . . X
History: 20th Century World 3 . .1.0 . . . . .X
Economics 4  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.5 . . . . .X
total Soc. Sci. credits / GPA . . . . . 5.5    /    X.XX

notes:
1 = home-based course, followed by an AP test
2 = outsourced course, with XYZ Online Course Provider
3 = outsourced course, with PQR Public High School
4 = dual enrollment course, with ABC Community College

The CED (Course and Exam Description) you will agree to with the College Board when you do your course audit to get the right to use the AP designation should have a list of suggested texts! That document is also really helpful, because it will also tell you exactly what topics are covered and with how much emphasis, in an AP course for that subject.

Are you looking at doing US Government or Comparative Government (or both)? If you are considering Comparative Government (one of my favorite APs) make sure there is somewhere your student can take the exam, because it is one of the least taken and least offered exams.

What type of material are you looking for?

If you don't get good ideas here, you can go to the College Board website and sign up to be a teacher.  They will provide with sample syllabi from the start, then you will have access to their Question Bank of old exam questions.  You'll also have access to the teacher email list, where you may get help on resources.

It looks as if this is the list to track down AP courses
