bibiche
I thought there was only one pronunciation, but in recent years have heard another. How do you say it? (I’m thinking Sawl versus Sal, but perhaps you have another way)

chiguirre
I think that's the difference between American and British pronunciation. In my head I hear: Salsbury steak but Sawlsbury Cathedral.

bibiche
Well, it doesn’t tell me how he pronounced his name, but I learned interesting stuff. Salisbury steak three times a day with hot water to wash it down is the secret to good health! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_H._Salisbury

Pawz4me
There's a town here in NC called Salisbury, and we (the natives) pronounce it as Saulsberry/Sawlsberry. If you pronounce it "Sal's berry" you'll definitely get the "you're not from around here, are ya?" questions and looks. ETA: Salisbury steak is pronounced the same way by most people here -- Saulsberry/Sawlsberry. Edited May 9, 2021 by Pawz4me 6
Laura Corin
In the UK it's regional. In the town itself it would be SAWLS-bree. In other parts of the country it might be SALS-bree.

prairiewindmomma
Sawls-bree, but there is almost a short u sound between the b and r in Bree. It’s not sawlz-buree, but that is the direction it is headed.

Junie
I apparently am the lone person here who pronounces this word with an extra syllable: Sal-is-ber-ry. It's how I was taught. Blame my parents, I guess. 😉

Ausmumof3
Sauls Brie. we have a suburb by that name down the road and everyone here says it that way. Maybe a hint of Sauls Berry in there but not quite that strong.

It's very weird, this pronouncing things like they're spelled... and I still feel like it's wrong!
