s/o How do you pronounce Salisbury?

There's a town here in NC called Salisbury, and we (the natives) pronounce it as Saulsberry/Sawlsberry. If you pronounce it "Sal's berry" you'll definitely get the "you're not from around here, are ya?" questions and looks.

ETA: Salisbury steak is pronounced the same way by most people here -- Saulsberry/Sawlsberry.

I don't know that I've ever said it out loud, but in my head it's: sawls - burr - ee.

Edited: This is b/c my mom is from Massachusetts. I got a chuckle out of this:

Thank you for this - it was hilarious. I went to see my parents in Haverhill today!

We go to Salisbury Beach as often as possible (beach pizza is the best pizza!) and it's pronounced SULZbuhree (that 'uh' is very soft) around here.

I saw that video a few years ago and had an epiphany that Worcester wasn't the only town that non MA residents might have trouble pronouncing.  Like, oh wow, Haverhill and Billerica aren't obvious! 😂

Sawls-bree, but there is almost a short u sound between the b and r in Bree. It’s not sawlz-buree, but that is the direction it is headed.

Exactly this, here.

OMG sending this to my mother who lived for years in Amherst (no H at all, swallowed t; strong emphasis on first syllable)

@Junieand @Amethyst I'm glad to see SOMEONE does the whole four syllables!

Very confusingly and annoyingly for someone who went to school in Amherst MA, where this is absolutely the correct way to say it (AM-erst), the "Amherst" in New Hampshire (which is closer to where I live now) is pronounced Am-herst... yeah, like it's spelled (also, not as strong syllable emphasis).  It's very weird, this pronouncing things like they're spelled... and I still feel like it's wrong!

I see you have to pass by Athol, Massachusetts to get from Am(h)erst  to AmHerst. Oh, please please tell me Athol is pronounced how I want it to be pronounced. 🤣

Just exactly how you imagine.  Which is nice, because if you're driving around AM-hers, and somebody cuts you off, you can roll your eyes and intone "Athol."
