City Mouse Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 That happened where I live a few years ago. A major internet transmission line that is located next to a river was eaten through by beavers. Took about 3 days to repair. Quote
wathe Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 I saw that. They also decorated their dam with the "Caution Cable" tape. Beavers really are amazing creatures. Around here they mostly cause flooding damage. They cause amazing changes to their environments: turn a forest stream into a pond or lake, that eventually fills in with sediment and becomes a meadow. They also have super-durable teeth. They incorporate iron into their bright orange tooth enamel. Their teeth literally "wear like iron". They can chew through just about anything. 1 Quote

They've been introduced in some parts of the UK to slow river systems and reduce downstream flooding. Quote
Spryte Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 (edited) No! This made me laugh so hard the kids were wondering what was wrong. We live on a large pond, and we love the beavers. But last spring some silly little beaver found our low voltage electric dog fence wire and they decided it was tasty. They chewed through it four times! Four! Aaaaagh. We finally gave up and buried it along the back side of our dog area - problem solved. Previously, that was the one area we didn’t feel the need to bury. Five years in this house, and it was never a problem until then. Silly beavers. I always picture a baby beaver who just developed a taste for electric fence wire. Beavers here are a mess. They also have an on-going war with the geese over a beaver lodge in the middle of the pond. The geese want it, the beavers want it. It’s an annual event with lots of honking and splashing.
