kristin0713 Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 If you have a dark house exterior, do you like it? We love the look of dark blue and gray stone. I'm wondering if it will be dated too soon or if we will get sick of it quickly. 1 Quote
mommyoffive Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 I love it! It wasn't an option on our house when we were building but some new houses in the neighborhood have it and it looks sooooo good. I would for sure go with that color combo if I was building right now. I don't think it will look dated at all. We have a light siding. Sort of a very light gray. I would go with darker next time as it looks dirty easier and we have to wash it often. Quote
Wheres Toto Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 We just put dark green siding on our house. We had a very light beige before. I love the new color and think it's much better than the old one. 11 Quote

Corraleno Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 My house is dark gray with white trim. It had been recently painted when I bought the house 7 years ago, and that was actually one of the things that appealed to me about it. I've seen photos of it before it was painted gray, when it was light beige, and it looks vastly better in dark gray. A neighbor a few doors down from me recently repainted their light blue house a warm medium gray, and it looks so much better. Quote
gardenmom5 Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 we have redwood siding, so it has very dark redwood stain to keep the color. My windows are white (though dh won't let me paint the trim around the windows - so those are dark redwood too.) I have seen a lot of homes doing a dark slate with lighter/ or even darker trim. I think they look very nice. My daughter did a very dark khaki greenish/gray when she had her house painted last year. Though she had a section that she was replacing with cedar as a contrast - she and 1ds carefully stained it. the painters painted it . . . Quote
Miss Tick Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 Ours is dark brown board and batten with dark red trim. It totally fits the aesthetic of our house, so we recently resided it using Hardyboard siding in the same color. It looks like prior to this color it has been white with teal trim. Luckily for me the change was made by the previous owners, because I freeze up if I have to make any decisions that fall in the "house decorating" category. 😄 Quote

I would love to redo our house with that. I will admit that when I mentioned it to dd20 (the one with an artistic eye) when we were out on a walk, she shocked me by saying she thought it will look very dated very soon. I had not thought of that, since I like it so much. So, I hear you about your concern. Quote
ericathemom Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 (edited) Ours is a dark blue/grey with black front door. It's a rental and was a light beige before our landlord decided to repaint this past fall. I would never have chosen such dark colors for this house because we get full afternoon southern California summer sun. It's *hot* on that side of the house and this house has poor insulation on the sunny side of the house as well. I love the look of a white house. My neighbors, however, did point out to me after the painters had finished just the white primer that the white reflection was causing a lot of glare into their home. 🤷♀️ ETA to add summary: The dark blue/grey siding is pretty but hot. Not a great choice for this particular house. Edited April 24, 2021 by ericathemom Quote
Toocrazy!! Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 Our house is painted Hale Navy with white trim. I don’t think it’s going to be dated soon. It seems pretty classic look to me. But we painted it this color almost 18 years ago so maybe we were just ahead of our time:) Dark grey almost black with natural cedar trim is the trendy look right now. Quote
Resilient Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 Mh house is dark gray. I don't like it. It doesn't fit the neighborhood and it looks forbidding. It came this way, and it's too expensive to repaint it just because I don't like it. The south side of the house gets really hot in the summer. Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 Yes. If you are in a super sunny clime, I wouldn't do it. It works for us because I'm in the Pacific Northwest. We are about 3 years in, and I do see some sun fading as well. I expected it, and I'm totally ok with it. It's giving it a softer look, which blends better with the stonework we have already. I don't know that I'll go for a dark color again next time around. I love it, but I do think it's a trend that will look dated in 10-15 years.....just like all of the beige of the 90s and the duck blue of the 80s. That's ok. It's paint. We get to make new choices all of the time! Quote
SounderChick Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 My mom just did a dark blue with white trim and a coral door. It looks amazing. Quote
Laura Corin Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 Does it make a difference to heat absorption and energy bills to have a dark colour? 1 Quote
ealp2009 Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 I think dark blue or other dark colors are pretty and won’t look dated too soon. Our house is purple /eggplant. Black is super trendy in our area and I feel like black houses are going to look super dated pretty quick. Especially ones with orange doors. And I would think it would be hot. 1 Quote
kristin0713 Posted April 25, 2021 Author Posted April 25, 2021 I appreciate these thoughts! We’re in the northeast with typical seasons. I have no idea if it makes any noticeable difference with energy efficiency. I’m thinking that a new house will be pretty energy efficient. Quote

I've seen some of these BLACK houses around here. Just a few, not real common. They tend to be in pretty upscale areas that are connected to rural (at least around here) so they pull elements that fit that (barn, industrial, agricultural) look. I admire them, but no I think I'd swelter and DIE in one. No way. I'd drive up every day and think I was entering The Tomb. My house is YELLOW baby, actual yellow. Yellow is my happy color so yellow is what it is. But you know, you do you. I put in black flooring (well almost black, it's a really super dark slate that is almost black but not shiny porcelain black) in my mudroom and people thought I was nuts. It's in the breezeway too. I love it, because it eats dirt, cleans like a breeze, and warms/grounds an otherwise awkward space. But I'm not sure what a dark color on a house is accomplishing, kwim? Is it style or part of color theory for how it makes you feel? I'm all in on color theory and how colors make you feel, so that's how I roll. Edited April 25, 2021 by PeterPan Quote
Ali in OR Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 We live in a neighborhood with a few. They do fade and need to be repainted more often to not look like a sun-faded, washed-out version of a dark color. That upkeep alone would keep me from doing it. Quote
Katy Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 Our last house had navy board and batten cedar. I hated it, it always looked dirty to me. Like dark wood floors, the color showed off the dust. Quote
