Hello! We are working through exercise 58C, the diagramming. The Purple Workbook Key unfortunately doesn't give instructors notes to help explain the answers, and while I have tracked with my kids as they've gone through these lessons and what they're learning, I am baffled by these sentences. Can someone help walk me through the diagramming of these sentences so I can explain them better to my kids, most specially the first sentence:

There must be no hesitation and no compromise with our purpose.

The other two sentences are:

During those days, the sonnet itself exploded out of me.

All of this is on account of us.

Thank you so much!

There must be no hesitation and no compromise with our purpose.

S = hesitation (and) compromise   Intransitive Verb = must be.

("There" = adverb, "with our purpose" = adverbial prepositional phrase)

The other two sentences are:

During those days, the sonnet itself exploded out of me.

S = sonnet  Intransitive Verb = exploded

("during those days" and "out of me" = adverbial prepositional phrases)

All of this is on account of us.

S = All   Verb = is

("of this" = adjectival prepositional phrase, "on account" = adverbial prepositional phrase modifying verb, "of us" = adjectival prepositional phrase modifying account)

Hi, Meghan--

Well-Trained Mind Press has an adjunct book, The Diagramming Dictionary, to help with diagramming instruction. Perhaps this book would be of help to you (and maybe its sister, The Grammar Guidebook).

We put the information in to separate books so people can order just what they want.  Some people want more help with diagramming, where others have more experience with it.  If we put alllll the information into the Core Instructor Guide, then everyone would have to pay the higher costs of production and shipping.  If you are comfortable working with a tablet or laptop both of these books are available in PDF format, which reduces both the purchase price and shipping ($0 on the latter).

Here is a little further info if you are interested. https://support.welltrainedmind.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034006533-Why-did-you-make-The-Diagramming-Dictionary-a-separate-book-

And by the way, welcome aboard!

We are not doing the same program, but my kid has difficulty with sentences like the first.  For him, the key is to find the verbs first:
'must be'

What must be?

Hesitation and compromise must be

From there, it's easier to start diagramming the rest of the sentence.  In the beginning we would have gone through and used symbols drawn above each word to give it function, then analyzed the symbols ('there' would be marked with a small circle for adverb, 'must be' large circles for verbs, 'no' - small triangle adjective, 'hesitation' large triangle noun...and so on.  It's easier to see when you're marking individual words first.
