It sounds like this police guy was basically just spitballing ideas and it got blown way out of proportion.

I'm not inherently against the idea of exploring how technology might help people clarify boundaries or affirm consent or open the discussion. But also, I can't quite picture how this would practically work. The fact that apparently there is a real app in Denmark seemed almost tacked on.

I feel like it might make police work easier but not actually make women safer.

Some further thoughts - this seems like it’s only useful to prove innocence but not guilt.  In other words a protection from false accusations.  But not really helpful for a conviction unless it’s mandatory and that would be a ridiculous intrusion of privacy.

Yes.  This would seem to benefit the person committing the assault, but not the victim.

The big problem I see is that consent should be able to be revoked at *any* point. Just because someone consents at the beginning of the encounter does not mean they will continue to consent.

This 100% plus being coerced into consenting on the app

It's the dumbest idea I've heard this week, and the week started with ScoMo talking about how lucky we were to march and not get shot. This is even dumber than that!

Consent can be coerced, it can be withdrawn subsequent to saying yes, it can appear to be given in situations where the ability to do so is impaired -  all this app does is protect men. 'But she ticked yes!'

Cons:

  • It would be very possible to get documented "consent" in various situations that weren't actual legal or moral consent.
  • Documented history of all one's poor decisions, which could be used in all sorts of bad ways.
  • Throw ice water on it why don'tcha.

Pros:

  • Throw ice water on it why don'tcha.
    • Fewer bonehead choices carried through.
    • Probable decline in unplanned pregnancies.
    • Probable decline in STDs.
    • Lots of societal benefits from the above 3 items.
