The last recommendation I read here is that there needs to be at least two weeks between ANY other vaccine and the Covid vaccine. The screening question I've seen is along the lines of "Have you had any vaccines in the last two weeks?"

I'd really like to know about flu. 'Cause if they figure out we're going to need an annual Covid booster, and if it can't be combined with flu . . .that's going to be a major issue.

The screening sheet I filled out asked about vaccines in the past four weeks, which surprised me.  DH had tetanus last week and was told by his doctor that he could have the covid vaccine within the two week period but he wants to wait at least 12 days - especially because he had bad side effects from the tetanus.

I’m eligible starting tomorrow for the Covid vaccine in my state. But I’m scheduled for my second Shingrix vaccine next week. I’m going to get my PA’s opinion, but I’m leaning towards waiting closer to three weeks to get the first Covid vaccine. Just to be a little extra cautious.

That's probably a good idea.  I wonder if DH should wait longer too after having such a bad reaction to tetanus.  Shingrix was tough on him, too.  Good luck with yours!

My understanding is that it isn't so much that the vaccines will cause problems given close together as much as it is hard to track side effects - gets blurry as to which caused what.

Thank you!  That's very interesting.

@Pawz4mecan you tag or pm me to let me know what your doctor says about the spacing between shingrix and covid vaccines?

@Kassia-- Will do. My appointment is next Friday, so look for an update that afternoon. I'll put it in this thread in case anyone else is wondering. DH goes Thursday for his first Pfizer vaccine, which is the same one I'm hoping to be able to get, so I'm going to have him pay close attention to the screening question about other vaccines.

What @ktgrokposted makes a lot of sense, and I sure hope that's the case. I'm assuming that would mean there's a decent chance they could decide it's okay to combine the yearly flu vaccine and a Covid booster (if it turns out we need one) in one vaccine.

My uncle, who is very high risk due to a lung transplant, just had his first Covid vaccine. One of his doctors, a specialist for infectious diseases, scheduled him for the shingrix vaccine 17 days following his second covid vaccine.

I had my first shot today (Moderna) and asked the pharmacist about spacing between covid and other vaccines.  They require FOUR weeks vaccine-free before giving covid, so DH is out of luck here unless he lies (he had tetanus one week ago).  This is Rite Aid pharmacy.  IIRC, the CDC recommends two weeks in between vaccines with the exception of tetanus, which they say is okay to have closer to the covid vaccine.  I am really upset and would have had DH wait on tetanus if I had known this.

That's weird. DH just got back from getting his first Pfizer vaccine at our county health department, and he said their criteria was two weeks.

I did some research and that's the standard recommendation.  Rite Aid must just be overly cautious for some reason.

I got Pfizer yesterday and 2 weeks was their criteria as well.  2 weeks is truly more than enough time between vaccines in my opinion.  The Covid vaccine is important enough that no way would I put off getting it once I reached 2 weeks from another vaccine.

It's 2 weeks here too. And at CVS. My uncle had recently had the second shingles booster and had to wait for the covid shot. He got that on day 15 after the shingles shot and was fine.

OP, you Southern Hemisphere folks will be the experts on pairing Covid vaccine with the flu shot in particular, as we are many months past that. I would see what your local docs say.

Yes.  I actually misunderstood and we are still a while from COVID shots but I think they’re trying to get flu shots rolled out faster probably to avoid that.

@Kassia- I had my Shingrix vaccine about 12:45 my time. My PA gave me her blessing and encouragement to schedule a Covid vaccine for two weeks from today at 1:00 or later. She says the CDC guideline is two weeks and as long as I'm past that it's fine.

Thank you so much for remembering to update me.  Glad you got the Shingrix vaccine (and hope you feel okay with it) and that your doctor said you'll be ready for the Covid vaccine soon!

I did get DH scheduled for his first covid vaccine and it will be three weeks after his tetanus so he should be fine.  🙂

Thanks again.
