fourisenough
@Farrar @Lori D. And any other middle grades book whisperers: Please recommend a few books for my DD. She’s nearly 12 and does NOT enjoy reading. However, she will listen to audiobooks for hours! In the last two weeks she has listened to and LOVED One Crazy Summer and Esperanza Rising. Can you suggest some more similar titles? Both have strong girl protagonists, unfamiliar (to DD) settings, real struggles and adventure, and coming-of-age themes. She’s sensitive to anything too dark or cruelty toward animals. Loves dogs, horses, themes of adventure and self-reliance. A little romance is fine, but nothing too suggestive. She’s a little ‘young’ for her age and turns her head if characters even kiss on a show! 😉 Help me turn this reluctant (non) reader into a book worm! Noreen Claire
The Girl Who Drank the Moon and The Witch's Boy by Kelly Barnhill are books I always recommend!
Haanz
Echo Mountain by Lauren Wolk checks all your boxes. My DD11 loved it so much she listened to it twice. The Wild Robot series is also good on audio.
eternallytired
I selected Front Desk (Yang) as a Family Book Club read for this year, and all three of my kids liked it so well that they insisted I get the sequel, which we're currently engrossed in. Out of My Mind (Draper) was another hit over here that has a strong girl protagonist facing interesting struggles. If she hasn't read Wonder (Palacio), I'd suggest that one, too. The protagonist is male, but the tone is similar and the story is very engaging. (My DD11 couldn't put it down!) ETA: I know I'm late to the game, but we're really pumped about the Yang books over here, and I figured you might not mind more options! Thanks for sharing. Due to this thread, I have a nice long list to keep her listening happily for months!
