For those who have experience with Clover Valley Honors Chem - could you give me a sense for the pros and cons of doing the teacher led class vs the parent graded option?

If you did the parent-graded option, what were the answer keys like? Did you feel equipped to support your child through the course?

What was the work load like for your child? I know the website says to expect to spend 10-12 hours per week on the class. I'm curious whether this range was accurate for your DC.

My daughter took Clover Valley Honors as a teacher led class.  She wound up switching to the regular version after a few weeks as it was a lot of work and she had a lot of other hard classes on her plate.  The teacher is amazing and it is one of my daughter's favorite classes to date.  I personally have no Chemistry background, so the parent led option would not have worked for me.

My kids did the regular version, but there's no way I could have effectively graded the work. I think this is really down to your own background and comfort with the subject matter and doesn't have a lot to do with the materials per se. My understanding is that you get the answers and solutions, but you still have to understand them well enough to give partial credit, guide if the answer is incorrect, help your student if they get stuck, etc. The person I knew who had bought the parent version had a science background and felt really comfortable with the material.

This.

I am familiar with honors version. There is no way I could even begin to understand any of the material and certainly couldn’t figure out the magnitude of mistakes and if partial credit is warranted.

Hmmm, thank you - this is really helpful! I have a science background, and I think I might be able to brush up enough, but perhaps that's hubris 🙂

DD did the pretest yesterday and I realized I didn't remember significant figures, so that's one strike against me...

I ordered a cheap used copy of the textbook for DD and I to look through so I can get a better sense of what I may or may not be getting myself into...

My twins are doing the regular version now.  I don't have a science background and we are doing the teacher graded version.  For us here, it is better that my boys receive feedback and grading from outside teachers - even if I had the background 😋.  The class is excellent though and they are learning a lot.  My boys would have been capable of the work in the honors version, but they are taking 3 other honors classes this year and we decided not to put more pressure on them for Chemistry.

I think that's a very good point in general. First of all, it's good for kids to get used to outside input. Secondly, like it or not, kids often treat input from outside teachers more seriously.
