Stimulus check question

We just got a check for our foster son for $1200.   The letter says it is from the state's dept. of DSS for foster son.   It is from the Economic Impact Payment .

This is for the stimulus, correct?   Isn't that the wrong amount?

No, but in looking it up, the first one was $500 and the second one was $600?   Is that correct?

For the first and second stimulus checks, qualified dependents were defined as anyone age 16 or under. Each dependent counted toward a flat rate in the family total, with no cap on the number of child dependents claimed. That was $500 for the first check, approved in March, and $600 for the second, which was approved and sent in December.

Then the $1200 doesn't make sense.

My first guess would be that your state created its own fund. Otherwise I would expect it to be direct from the IRS, not the state.

If it didn’t say EIP, I’d wonder if it was a combined stipend/clothing allowance/other special reimbursement payment.

A stimulus check would be federal.  Likely this was a foster care covid bonus that the state did.  I know several states that did that.

Please find enclosed a check #### for $1,200.   This check is to forward the Economic Impact Payment to you that was made payable to the Department of Family Services on behalf of (child's name.)

It sounds to me like the child was given an adult portion probably due to being a ward of the state at that time.
