Carrie12345 Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 that can be pointed to as a good model for handling domestic violence and/or other situations of women and children in crisis? I’ve always known that “we” do a terrible job of helping women get to safety, but knowing and *knowing from watching a loved one* are two very different things. Seeing victims get further victimized by multiple positions within the systems expected to help them is nauseating and terrifying. Surely there must be at least one place that can be held up as an example when pushing for change? Quote
Lecka Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 I read “No Visible Bruises” in the past year. It talks about some various things being done in various places. I don’t remember it like there was one place doing everything. It was like — one place was doing really good things in the police department, another place doing really good things in the court system, and another place doing really good things with shelters. It’s a newer book and got good reviews. 1 Quote
Lecka Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 (edited) My impression is, there’s not one place, but there are model programs that can be held up for various parts, as examples of things working well in a certain place. Edit: I think there are some things where difference in the issues between a large city or a rural area mean they would not be doing things the same way, iirc. Like — I think transportation was a bigger issue in a rural area, and housing insecurity was a bigger issue in a big city. Edited February 9, 2021 by Lecka Quote
popmom Posted February 10, 2021 Posted February 10, 2021 My church is very proactive about this. So if someone in our church knows of a case where the woman needs to get out, our church has a protocol in place for helping those women/families. This involves extensive support in the forms of funding the move, legal costs, mentoring, employment help, childcare, family counseling, helping out with rent, etc. until they are back on their feet. Our mercy ministry is well funded, and the mercy team is well equipped with expertise in areas that would support women coming out of that situation. It doesn't even matter if they attend our church. We are a relatively small church though, so it's a small scale system. 2 Quote
