“Digital exams taken on desktop or laptop computers will be the sole exam format for many subjects on the Administration 2 and 3 test dates. Schools can authorize students to take these exams securely at home, if needed, providing a testing option for schools that are closed or have students who are unable to test in person for safety reasons. Because the full-length digital AP Exams require typewritten free responses, the exams can’t be taken on smartphones.

Students will need to install the digital exam application on the computer they will use throughout AP testing this year; this will not be the same digital testing platform that was used for emergency testing in spring 2020. Students will not need to install the LockDown Browser they may use for secure AP Classroom assignments.

Digital exams will be full length and test the same knowledge and skills as paper and pencil exams, in a format-appropriate manner. Teachers can feel confident continuing to move through their courses as planned, using existing practice exam questions, whether the school elects to administer paper and pencil or digital exams for a given subject.

Whether digital exams are given at school or at home, schools are responsible for ensuring that all requirements for digital testing are met and that students complete all setup and readiness steps before exam day and understand and follow exam security policies and procedures. Even if a school is only planning to administer paper and pencil exams, it should ensure that its students are prepared to take the digital version of the exam (if applicable), in the event they need to take a makeup digital exam.”

Highlights

  • The 2021 exam schedule provides 3 testing dates (Administrations 1, 2, and 3) for each subject between early May and mid-June. Paper or digital exams are offered, depending on the subject and exam date.
  • As always, paper and pencil exams and Chinese and Japanese exams have local start times and can begin up to 1 hour after the official start time. However, digital exams have synchronous start times worldwide, and automatically begin at the same official start time everywhere.
  • Schools can use any of the testing options, as needs and circumstances warrant, and are free to use multiple options, if available, during a given exam administration window.
  • Schools make all decisions about which exams are offered. Students won’t be able to choose exam dates on their own. Beginning in early March, AP coordinators will be able to assign students to Administration 2 and/or 3 exams, if needed.
  • We extended the deadline for final digital submission of AP Art and Design portfolios and AP Computer Science Principles (CSP), AP Seminar, and AP Research performance tasks to Thursday, May 20, 2021, 11:59 p.m. EDT.”

Note that all of the AP world language exams as well as the music theory exam will be administered in schools only.  There are no digital at-home options for any of them.  All of the aforementioned (except Chinese and Japanese) will be on paper only, in school only.  Chinese & Japanese will be computer-based and in school only, as per usual.

And still we have no solutions for homeschooled students who cannot find brick & mortar schools willing to register them.  I only managed to find seats for 2 of 5 exams.  One of the remaining 3 is a world language exam that requires in person administration.  My fed-up senior says she thinks she’ll skip all of them.  I don’t blame her.

Yes, we are in this situation.  I tried multiple public and private high schools back in the fall and was turned down everywhere.

I guess I need to call them again and ask if they will be offering an online administration, and if so, whether my son can register.    I can't imagine that they will agree but no harm in trying, I suppose.

This is so aggravating.
