Ginevra Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Can this be reduced/eliminated by weigh training or other non-surgical means? I have a notion the answer is no, but I’m trying anyway. Quote

Sneezyone Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Weight training will help. Pulling bands, deadlifts, and dumbbell exercises, etc. 4 Quote
Katy Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 If you mean fat rather than loose skin, you could try ice packs with one layer of cloth or towel over them, which works like cool sculpting. You have to repeat multiple times for months and if you apply unevenly the fat will die unevenly. I’ve had a few knee surgeries and because of icing I have less fat on one leg just above my knee than the other. Given that it’s your back though, you might look into cool sculpting so it’s even. Farrar Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 An older friend of mine who at the time was around 50, who liked to work out, who was a runner, in great shape, and very serious about her body once told me once that it was the thing that bugged her most about her own body, but also that it's the thing that's hardest to get rid of. She said something about how the amount of those exercises you have to do to actually make a real visible dent is absurd. I remember being like, oh, I am just starting to get that. I will never be the sort of person who is in the shape that my friend is in, so I guess I'd just better not get hung up on it. 3 4 Quote
Kassia Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 I think the only thing to try is to build muscle there and reduce body fat. But I find that to spot reduce, sometimes my body fat level gets too low in some areas, while I'm still flabby in others. Our bodies seem to have spots they like to store fat - for me it's my belly. 1 Quote

I have rather excellent muscle tone in my center and upper back, but nevertheless, those rolls remain. I was actually considering cool sculpting. Although explaining to dh that I want to spend a few thousand dollars freezing my back rolls, mainly so I can wear a backless dress in September is sure to go over about as well as finding a hair in the macaroni salad. 11 Quote

Yeah that tends to be true for me, too. I think it wouldn’t go away (without a procedure) unless I was very, very low in body fat, such that I’m skeletal everywhere else, which is not the look I’m after either. 2 Quote
gardenmom5 Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 you can't target where the fat comes off. weight training will increase muscle mass - and that will burn more calories even just sitting around doing nothing. eventually - fat would come off there too. 1 Quote
Ali in OR Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Scapula=shoulder blade=back=behind me=I can't see it, therefore it does not exist. So no, no problem here. 6 1 18 Quote
Corbster98 Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Just wanted you to know you are not alone. I am 45 and workout regularly... crossfit and weight training. That area below my scapulas have that same roll of fat. It is not significantly pronounced but visible. I tend to think as we age, certain areas of our body just store fat that is harder to shed. More cardio might/ should help to decrease it and of course weight training increases metabolism too. 2 Quote
Laura Corin Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 I had an incipient crease back there. It seems to have gone. I'm not noticeably thinner than I was, so presumably it is due to some combination of yoga and Nordic walking. 1 Quote
Negin Posted January 29, 2021 Posted January 29, 2021 I haven't read all of the replies yet, but I believe that swimming may help. Whenever I've stuck with swimming, my back looks so much better. Typing this is reminding me to get back to it again. Swimming fires up more of the major muscle groups than any other cardio exercise. 3 Quote

Yes, then it wouldn't be sustainable. You need to have an option that's relatively easy to do and that you at the very least, like, but hopefully, love. I follow several (too many) channels on YouTube. Although most of of the workouts by Blogilates are too challenging for me, especially these days, I really love the Ultimate Back Workout | 5 Moves to Your Fittest Upper Body. Others that I have either liked a lot or that I plan on doing. I hope that they will help address that specific problem area. mmasc Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 The absolute best thing I did for myself all of pandemic-last-year was buy myself a set of PowerBlocks (and fortunately I made the purchase in February when stuff was easily available). Then I bought the $15 Fitness Blender “Blend” workout program. I did it regularly. After that, I bought another one (Strong) and did it regularly. It was truly the most beneficial thing I’ve ever done. I’m sure cardio helps as well, but the weight lifting noticeably improved that area of my back. And my shoulders also looked very different. I was honestly quite surprised, as I’ve never been a regular exerciser! 4 Quote
