We just had a nail trimming debacle and we are both shaken. I cut well below the quick, I thought, but one of her nails started bleeding and it was bad. I applied styptic powder and it helped but she still had blood all over her. 😞 She's a tiny bird and I'm worried about the blood loss. I tried rinsing her off some in her bathtub. She is now very stressed, sitting on the floor of her cage. The nail is no longer bleeding but she still has blood on her feathers. I've covered the cage, shut off the lights, shut the curtains, and turned on a space heater. Please pray that she recovers quickly. I feel awful.

Any update?
My heart aches for you both.  💛

She is still sitting on the bottom of her cage. Not what I want to see. 😞 However, she is bright-eyed and listens to me when I talk to her.

Praise the Lord, she is much better. She is sitting on her perch again. She ate a little kale, preened her feathers a bit, and even tugged at one of her toys.

Poor thing, she spent a little time studying her nail, too. I can see that I definitely got it too short somehow. Maybe she moved it or maybe I just misaimed the clippers. They grow so fast, so I need to learn how to do them.

Realizing you cut a nail to the quick is the worst feeling.

Poor thing, she spent a little time studying her nail, too. Did she then give you a severely judgmental look? That's what our sugar gliders do.

I'm so glad your little bird is doing better. ❤️ What kind of bird is she?

When I worked at the vet ER, we sometimes saw birds that had been nicked during a nail trim.  We'd make a little bandage bootie for them to keep them from fussing at their nail, and they looked SO CUTE and SO FURIOUS that they had a boot on their foot.

Hope your sweet tweetie is continuing to improve, mercy!

Thank you so much! She is! She had a good appetite this morning for her apple and seed. She was chatty and spent a long time preening. I am so thankful. 🙂

That is so cute! She is a canary.

I am just seeing this now.  I am very happy she is doing well and has fully recovered.  I hope you are doing better too.

Can you post a picture of her?  What is her name?

We have a hard time getting good pictures of her because she is scared of the camera / phone, but I will try! Her name is Sunshine / Sunny.

Continued prayers are appreciated. She is keeping her sore foot tucked up into her feathers a lot of the time. 😢 However, I have seen her use it to perch (on all different widths of perches) and to groom herself, and I've also seen her stretch out that foot and leg with no problem. There is no swelling I can see. (Do birds legs swell? I don't know!) Hopefully it is just the sore toenail.

Awe, we’ll pray for Sunny to heal quickly. So, glad your baby bird is feeling better. My daughter is a little bird she adores, too.

Good gosh she is precious!  What a beautiful little bird.  This looks more like a painting than a picture.   As long as you have seen her perch on her foot then I hope that means she is just sore (and guarding it) and she will continually improve.  I am praying for her (and you).  Please let us know how she is doing until you know for certain that she is perfectly okay.   I also love her name, it fits her just perfectly.   Thank you for posting her picture.

I'm so glad she's doing better. It's probably still a little tender, so she's taking care of it while she mends by not putting pressure on it.

She's so cute and her name is perfect! She looks like sunshine and happiness. ❤️

Thank you for your prayers!!! I will definitely keep you updated.

She took a big splashy bath today and has been chatty. 🙂

She is! She is such a gentle, curious, friendly, cheerful little soul.

Awwww.  She is adorable.  I am glad she is better.  And I agree that picture looks like a painting!

She’s so lovely.

When my dd had a pet rabbit, trimming nails was one task that struck fear in my heart. He was a black Netherland Dwarf and his nails were black. I cut too short a couple of times.

Friday update! I have the smartest little canary ever. So, I was looking at her feet today, both of them, to compare the sore foot to the non-sore one. I was looking at them from all angles. The little smarty pants looked her feet over carefully herself, and then held one up in the air while looking at me--like she was doing it to show me! I have never seen her just hold her foot up like that, in mid-air. She held it still for about two minutes. It wasn't the sore one, and she never put it up into her feathers like she usually does when standing on one foot. Adorable.

She's doing great. Eating well, preening, taking baths. We haven't been home much today, but neither DD or I have seen her tuck her sore toe in her feathers.

Re: the photo looking like a painting--it's from my DD's phone, and DD is overly fond of filters. So that might explain it! 🙂 She is just as cute (cuter!) in sharp focus. 😉

She is such a cutie.  I can just picture her doing this.  I am so happy she is doing well.  Reading your update just made my day.

Cutting my dogs' nails does the same thing to me.  Neither are cooperative and it just scares me so much that I will cut too close (which I have sometimes).  Like your rabbit, one of them has a few black nails which just makes an already hard job all the tougher.

Our cockatoos nails are so sharp that I can’t pick him up without a jumper on and I’m still not game to cut them.  At some point I know we have to deal with it though 😞

Obviously I'm not an expert yet 😞 , but I will say the thing that helped me most was watching others do it on YouTube.

My daughter desperately wants a cockatoo. 🙂

Just curious.  How do birds in the wild manage?  I mean, they obviously don't have someone clipping their nails.

From what I've read, their nails wear down naturally because they are perching and hopping on a wider variety of surfaces, many of them rough.

My bird does have some natural wood perches, but they are not enough to keep her nails worn down.

You see a lot of sandpaper perches in pet stores, but those can create sores on the feet (as you might expect!).

I've heard concrete perches can help. I bought one, but my bird was scared of its bright pink color and wouldn't go near it. I have some bird safe white paint and I'll try covering up the pink.

Oh, I love cockatoos! There was a sweet one named Rosie that would hang out with me while I worked. Sometimes he would dance for me ❤️

How sweet! DD and I have been watching cockatoo rescue videos lately! Here are some:

Parrot Loves Going to Home Depot with His Dad

This Guy Wasn't A Bird Fan Until He Met This Little Bald Cockatoo

Rescue Cockatoo Loves Sunbathing and Dancing With Mom

And this isn't a cockatoo, but will tug at your heart strings!

Sunday update: Sunny's foot is all better! She will even stand on that foot alone when she is resting, with the other tucked into her feathers. Yay! Thanks for your prayers and good thoughts. ❤️
