Inauguration - NO POLITICS, just thoughts on the ceremony

Recommended Posts

To keep this appropriately light, I'll start with a note on the musical choices - I was NOT expecting Lady Gaga for the anthem. I'm still not quite over that.

Also, I watched the Amazon Prime livestream which had a lot of inside shots because it's done by the people who set the whole thing up - and good for them, they deserve their kudos here! - but all the shots of people lined up waiting for their turn to be announced put me in mind of nothing so much as a high school awards ceremony. Well, I guess they're all done on about the same pattern anyway.

Amanda Gorman was amazing. And I loved seeing Eugene Goodman, who put his life on the line to lead rioters away from the Senate on January 6th, escorting Kamala Harris at her inauguration.

Amanda Gorman was amazing! I watched it live and have already rewatched her once.

It was wonderful!  I loved the fact that so many of the First Ladies coordinated and wore purple for unity.  I loved Bernie Sanders's home knit mittens.  I loved that Pence was there.  I thought Lady

Lady Gaga was amazing. Amazing.

Biden’s speech was excellent.

The young poet laureate - Amanda? -she has placed herself in the realm of historic orators. So very good.

Gorman, that’s it. Amanda Gorman. I won’t forget that name again.

I thought Gaga did a great job and I enjoyed Brooks as well. I didn't care for JLo's version.

I thought all the ladies looked lovely but Michelle Obama's was my favorite too.

One would think Clinton could afford a mask to stay on his face. It was driving me crazy.

I loved seeing all the people from both sides talking and having a good time together. I especially appreciated Harris and Pence sharing a moment before he left.

Amanda Gorman stole the whole show.  She is amazing.

Loved Biden's speech.

Lady Gaga, didn't wow me with her signing.  It was ok.    J. Lo through me for a loop with  the "lets get loud" in the middle of her song.

Garth Brooks sounded great.

I loved as Pence was leaving that he and Harris were so civil to each other.  Even laughing together.  What a great example, that this year you can't take for granted.

I was in tears during every song.  They took such bigger meaning after Jan 6th..  It was really healing to have this moment at the capitol.  My kids have watched the whole day.  We are still watching.  I am so glad they are seeing this.

Harrowing as it’s been, this whole election season has been such a great civics lesson for my kids. Not usually a Lady Gaga fan but she knocked it out of the park. Was I the only one who thought “mockingjay” about the dove on her dress though? 😂. That’s not political commentary, my son and I just had a good laugh over it!

Lol it was but I thought her dress was at least modest.  It was fitting for her.

Me too.   I wonder if he is going to have a role in her security.  He is a true hero.

Bernie Sanders' coat and mittens were pretty awesome. I'm always in awe at the lighter jackets in DC in January, although Michelle Obama's outfit was superb. Sanders actually looked like he was prepared for winter. I saw it described on Twitter as "Vermont grandfather chic". LOL.

Yep, Amanda Gorman was the hit. Lady Gaga did a great job today.

Great speech, very moving and emotional.

Lady Gaga was herself just enough and she always surprises me when she sings.

JLO of course had to be JLO and throw in that song in the middle. Loved her singing too, usually not a fan.

Loved seeing all the presidents and spouses. Always one of the highlights of any inauguration for me.

Loved seeing VP Pence and wife.

Loved seeing the fashion of the ladies . Note to self: Look for more masks to co-ordinate with clothes. Loved the first lady's complete outfit including mask. I shall copy that especially the mono-chromatic look. Not sure of the jewelry.

Cried a few times during the ceremony especially oaths.

Garth Brooks as his usual amazing self with Amazing Grace.

Amanda Gorman is wow !

Moved, emotional, poignant, proud, overwhelmed, grateful, thankful were emotions felt.

I thought it was very well done.  I was looking forward to seeing what Lady Gaga would wear.  I thought she did a good job of being Lady Gaga and yet not distractingly so.

Amanda Gorman was amazing.  I also thought the flags were very moving.

I told my daughters that Gaga was dressed like a person from Hunger Games, “but in a good way.” 😂 I thought her costume a good compromise between her personal tastes and a nod to the decorum of the event. What I most enjoyed was the emotion on her face.

I love that!
I hope I can find the entire event video online for rewatching.

I worried about Laura Bush. Her coat didn't seem warm enough for sitting outside that long.

I felt for all the women there.  You want to look great, but the men have the upper hand in staying warm in their suits.  Easy to layer under that.

He's been promoted to Acting Deputy Senate Sergeant-at-Arms, although I don't know if that means he will have that job permanently.

Regarding Eugene Goodman: "He was there in his new role as acting deputy House sergeant at arms, CNN's Jeff Zeleny reported."

I loved "let's get loud" as a call to unity.  It was between "with liberty and justice for all" and a reprise of a line from "this land is our land" (can't remember the exact line).  I saw it as a call to be excited, to commit to unity.

I loved it.   It was just beautiful.  I loved Gaga and Jennifer Lopez.  I didn't enjoy Garth Brooks (and also noted he moved past VP Harris to shake Pence's hand and only when Harris extended her hand did he shake it as he was leaving).   Amanda Gorman's poem was just lovely and powerful.     Pres. Biden's speech was wonderful and I think he did a great job.   Watching VP Harris get sworn in made me tear up.

All in all, a great great day and fantastic inauguration.

Yes!  It was obvious she was very moved to be singing at the inauguration.   She looked like she was really getting choked up at times.

I told my kids that she has real talent. And getting through that after growing up with a speech impediment? Wow. (She says she's running for president in 2036.) Her skill with words was something you just don't hear anymore. (And her choice of colors!! She is big into fashion.)

I came in on it late -- missed the swearing in completely on the live stream. I teared up several times. I feel bad that so few got to be there in person. Having experienced one in person (far back in the crowds), it is a historic moment to be a part of. Certainly more comfy & easier to hear in front of the computer screen.

I took Garth Brooks' oversight to be accidental. I don't think he "saw" her at first (with masks & such). Same thing with President Bush. He turned back for him after turning to leave.

Y'all, the cameras kept showing this blonde woman in the crowd and I had no idea who she was. After checking online for Lady Gaga's outfit (since I missed that part), now I know who the blonde woman was.... :)

She is only 22 years old!   She is incredibly poised and well spoken.  She would be a fantastic speech writer for presidents.

Well, I had to leave pretty early to go work, but I loved the beautiful coats. Like, if you know you get to go to an inauguration, it would be fun to go find the most beautiful winter finery. It's all just functional rain gear here in Oregon and I wouldn't wear a wool coat much here, but just for inauguration I want a beautiful coat in a rich color, wonderful gloves, maybe a nice hat, and this year a coordinating mask.

Even better!   If she is this well spoken, poised, and confident at 22, I can only imagine how she will be when she is older.   She is a role model for sure.

Truth, I was thinking she's too young to be president for a while yet, but there are other offices! she's a sociology major, which seems like a good background for politics.

The inauguration was beautiful and, for me, a perfect step towards healing.

I was so glad my children got to watch.

That was my feeling as well, a great step towards healing.

It was such an honor to watch it with my teen.

I agree, the clothes are wonderful.  On the other hand, I can't help thinking how much Vice President Harris must be wishing for her Chuck Taylors.  I keep cringing as I see her and Dr. Biden's heels on the marble steps of the Capitol, and then in the parade.

Silly question, but why can't the women wear pant suits w layers and more substantial coats?

We really enjoyed the ceremony here and keep checking in occasionally to see what is happening now. Such a hopeful day for this country, and seeing Harris get sworn in was emotional.

I only watched the swearings in and Biden’s speech.

Personally I’d prefer if they could have just skipped all the pomp and ceremony. I thought the performers were weird choices and I don’t like military anything ever, so mostly I just kept it on mute. I don’t think I’d ever watched an inauguration before but I guess it was what I’d expected.

Definitely a wonderful, historic day. I think it’s going to take me awhile to process that the nightmare really is over.
