I didn't realize that some places have restrictions?  Please help me plan.

DH and son are driving from NC to CA.   it looks like most states will be ok, but am I understanding that they will not be able to stay in hotels in places like New Mexico and California with an out of state DL and not having quarantined?

I am looking at this:

I live in New Mexico which has very tight restrictions. There is a quarantine, but it isn’t being widely inforced. Hotels are at reduced capacity, so you could have trouble finding a room in many places, and there is no indoor dining.
Well, that is not exactly true. 1 county is now in our yellow level and can have indoor dining at 25%. One country made it to green, but it is the smallest county in the state and it does not have any restaurants or hotels anyway.

I would strongly suggest that you do not plan on staying overnight in New Mexico if at all possible.

Also, I remember seeing something about Covid restrictions that will take effect after the inauguration on Wednesday, but I don’t remember any details.

That is wonderful.  I so wish every state had tight restrictions and weren't letting people freely in.

My friend told me yesterday that driving from  her parent's home in OR to her home in WA (8 hours' drive for her), there were no restrooms open.

And yes, I do wish my son's group would delay their start again.    And I suppose they may.....

It’s really hard to know exactly what is actually happening.  We recently stayed in hotels and Airbnbs in three different states, two of which have some kind of quarantine rules.  But it didn’t affect us at all, even when we were arriving at a major airport and obviously were coming from out of state.  Even though I just travelled, I have no idea what the rules are because our actual experience is different from what the guidelines say online.

If I *had* to travel, I’d call hotels now and talk to a person to make sure that I could book ahead of time, and then reconfirm right before travel. But it seems much better to not travel at all right now.

Somestimes you don't have a choice.

Honestly, I can't imagine anyone driving from North Carolina to California (and possibly back) right now on a lark.  I actually do have a friend who moved from California to Richmond this summer, and they had a real issue finding hotels and restaurants that were open.

No advice, but lots of sympathy.

Not driving back.   My husband is helping my son drive the car out there and then flying back.   My son's job starts next week.

Congratulations to your ds! That is a really nice thing for your dh to do. I've done a similar cross-country drive for school and a friend joined me. Sorry that there's the added stress of this pandemic.

Are the 2 guys planning on driving hard through the nights and just stopping for gas and food? It may not be fun, but might make things more practical. I'd pack plenty of spare masks, hand sanitizer and wipes and just 'go for it' if they are both driving.

No, they plan to stop, neither of them is able to drive in the middle of the night.   And they have a few stops they hope to make.

We have made the trip a few times as we are from CA and still have family there.

Some parts of CA have banned short stay rentals.  I know this only because locally a vacation resort is renting their condos by the month right now, normally daily or weekly, because it’s the only way they can legally get any revenue out of them at all.  Unfortunately the rules seem to be kind of a mishmash from one location to another, and it’s hard to get definitive information.

Thanks.   I think the plan is for DH to stay overnight at a hotel near the airport since his flights leaves at 5:30am.   He is flying out of Santa Barbara, an airport we haven't used before.  I guess I need to call the hotel, although it looks like I shouldn't have trouble booking.
