ktgrok Posted January 12, 2021 Posted January 12, 2021 I posted a while back about produce storage, and that is going well! It IS more work, but things are lasting and mostly get eaten - at least if they are seen. I wash and store produce, nuts, prepped veggies, diced/roasted sweet potatoes, and leftovers all in these containers now. It has made a HUGE difference to use truly clear on all sides containers - things are much more easily spotted and eaten. They take up way more room than my old cheap containers but it's worth it! I also prep overnight oats for a few days at a time, in different, twist top round containers. That still leaves things like gluten free bread, cheese, deli meat, and cheese in their original packages. Biggest issue is the cheese - both packages of slices and packages of shredded cheese (mozzarella and cheddar) tend to migrate around the fridge, are then hidden, multiple bags get opened, I can't tell what is fresh and what is old, etc. Any tips for storing those things, so they are less likely to migrate or become hidden? Also, I'm starting to think I ought to put all the containers of berries, grapes, etc on an open shelf, rather than in the fruit drawer, so that the kids spot them more easily. Make sense? Quote
prairiewindmomma Posted January 12, 2021 Posted January 12, 2021 I have clear acrylic bins, labeled, in my fridge. My kids have such poor visual memory that this keeps things from migrating or being hidden. They can return to the labeled bins. This system also makes grocery ordering super easy. I can look in my fridge and see what has been used up and what hasn’t. 1 Quote
Katy Posted January 12, 2021 Posted January 12, 2021 I was also going to suggest bins. I even have short ones inside my produce drawers. Quote
PeterPan Posted January 12, 2021 Posted January 12, 2021 (edited) I freeze all cheese except the *one bag* or type in use. And since cheese is $$ and tends to get snarfed, I hide it in the celery drawer. I don't refrigerate most fresh fruit like strawberries or raspberries, because they get forgotten. Apples go in a drawer in the frig beside the drawer of onions. Oranges go in the frig and lemons. But delicate fruit (berries, bananas, melons) I put out so they get eaten. Even grapes do better if I just put them out. Then they're just gone till I march my butt back to the store. At least you don't have a condiment problem. That's my nemesis, all those stupid bottles!!! Edited January 12, 2021 by PeterPan Quote

I keep things like opened cheese slices/shreds and lunch meat in that wide drawer. I keep the unopened packages "filed" in the small cardboard display boxes that hold Starkist tuna pouches on the grocery store shelf. When tuna pouches are on sale I'll buy several and take the cardboard box along with the pouches. I use one for cheeses and one for deli meats; the meat and cheese packages that I buy fit nicely into the tuna boxes and I arrange them by use-by date in the box. And since I only keep the opened packages in my wide drawer this prevents having multiple packages of the same item opened. 1 Quote
