Anyone heard anything more about kids under 12? I'm very concerned that everyone around me seems to think that life is back to normal once they, adults, get vaccinated but without vaccinating kids I'm not sure that is possible. I know they are less likely to get visibly sick, but it I'm also seeing reports of possible longer term damage even in asymptomatic kids.

And if we stop masking, etc I see cases rising in the pediatric population.

I am very worried about this and what it means for us.   Hopefully the rates will be so low with everyone else getting the vaccine that it will be safe to be out and about.  But I just don't know that is what is going to happen.

I think a lot of people don't even know that the vaccine is not for kids at this point.

This gives me a little bit of hope!

What about ages 0 to 15? When can we expect a COVID-19 vaccine for infants, kids and younger teens?

With any luck, a full pediatric vaccine will be available by late 2021.

I just had a conversation with a parent who is getting into homeschooling now because she realized that it was going to be at least another year before the vaccine came for kids.

Homeschooling is not new to us - this is my 8th year, but we’ve always had some combination of homeschool/public school/private school for our 4 kids. Due to all of the uncertainties regarding Covid and our youngest son’s complex medical issues and absolute inability to do any form of distance learning, we pulled him out of public school this year to homeschool. It’s not easy, because he is profoundly disabled, but I’m thinking that without a vaccine for children anytime soon, we may end up keeping him home another year. The health issues are definitely a concern, but if there continue to be changes to the mode of instruction, that would be very disruptive for him. Any amount of distance learning is a no-go for him. He has a 1:1 aide all day in school, and the kind of assistance he needs can’t be replicated on a screen.

My daughter previously attended a homeschool hybrid program at a private school, but I’m not sure we’ll send her back either. From a distance, I now see that the families who attend there are the type of families who aren’t likely to vaccinate themselves or their children. Mask wearing is done, but only to fulfill the law, not out of a real belief that masks are an important public health measure. For example, tiny face-shields are permitted. They just cover the nose and mouth but leave a large gap between the shield and the skin. They technically meet the requirements of our state’s mask mandate, but I can’t see how they do a whole heck of a lot of good.

Our city has a major research university. A doctor was recently interviewed for the news and suggested the quickest way to have your child vaccinated would be to enroll them in a vaccine trial. If my kids were younger, I would definitely consider it.(They are all old enough for the adult vaccine.)
