Update: thanks all, but never mind, the idea has been shot down!

Our large basement has a very nice, fairly new vinyl floor. Would roller skating damage it? Assume clean wheels.

Google is no help.

Thanks! 🙂

In my experience, it leaves black streaks and almost scratches that are nigh impossible to get out. We live in a mobile home, so long and skinny. I used to let the kids ride their scooters and roller skates in the laundry room/kitchen during the winter. It doesn't tear up the linoleum, but it's got "scratches" that don't come out.

My concern would be whether it would scratch or gouge it.  Also googling says to avoid rubber mats because it can react chemically to vinyl.  Are roller skate wheels rubber?  (I don't know the answer to that so sorry if it's a stupid question.)

DH is no fun. What about the garage? Pull the cars out and skate there?

YASSS. I might actually try this. We have a three car garage. One stall is taken up with the lawn tractor, but it might still be big enough. Thanks!

Well boo to no roller skating in the house. I was creating quite an image in my head about your basement-turned-roller rink, complete with disco ball and ‘80s music playing, maybe some black light posters on the wall...

Your DH probably has better sense than me. Lol

Had this been me, I would have had the kids down there skating up a storm with nary a thought to the floor.    Man, they could have had so much fun down there.  Like @MEmama  said, turn it into a very cool roller rink (disco ball a must!).  Sigh,  being a responsible adult stinks sometimes.

I want it badly! LOL. Shows that my OCD meds are working, because I never would have in a million years considered such a thing before I was taking them. Indeed, I would have been horrified at the thought of scratches. Now, I'm like, how fun would that be???

ETA: His concern is less about the floor and more about us running into the drywalled and painted walls. 🙂

He's got a point.

We let our kids ride bikes in the house when they were little.  The floors were fine.  The walls, not so much.

My SIL has hardwood, and when the kids were younger, they had house tricycles, scooters, roller skates, etc that were never used  outside. They could get up some serious speed (and it definitely made their house a fun place to play). It phased out as the kids got older.

Hence the battered walls 🙂

@MercyAi hope you figured out a skating rink by now. I just had to say that I giggle every time I scroll past this thread title!

I'm going to try to set up the garage for it! I just need to clean out some boxes that I've had sitting out there since this summer.

I think I'm also going to use some of my Christmas money to buy some proper outdoor skates--I just have some rink skates and the wheels are too hard. I'm excited. 🙂
