Acorn Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 I have a math loving 7th grader who is curious about basic trig because she runs into it on adaptive tests at school. I'm looking for a fun intro book for a present. I don't want a curriculum book that will overwhelm the child, but more something fun to read. Initially I was looking at a Basher science book: Algebra and Geometry, but I think that would have been better about two years ago. It is hard to tell by shopping online. Quote
Lori D. Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 Not about Trig, but my own math-loving (college age) DS#1 has really enjoyed this whole series by Clifford Pickover: - The Math Book: From Pythagoras to the 57th Dimension, 250 Milestones in the History of Math - The Physics Book: From the Big Bang to Quantum Resurrection, 250 Milestones in the History of Physics - The Chemistry Book: From Gunpowder to Graphene, 250 Milestones in the History of Chemistry DS#1 also really enjoyed: - Humble Pi: A Comedy of Maths Errors (Matt Parker) I know nothing about these titles, (and they may include adult topics, or be the wrong interest-level for your student) but they look interesting:Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea (Selfe)How Calculus Reveals the Secrets of the Universe (Strogatz)The Joy of X: A Guided Tour of Math from One to Infinity (Strogatz) Quote
Lori D. Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 ETA: Maybe this? Although it looks fairly "school-y" to me...Must Know High School Trigonometry (McCune) Or what about:Sneaky Math: Graphic Primer with Projects (Tymony) -- Algebra, Geometry, Trig, Calculus He's probably beyond the first half of it, BUT... if your 7th grader also enjoys hands-on, this looks fun. Emerald Stoker Posted November 28, 2020 Posted November 28, 2020 (edited) There are some interesting books published by Dover; here's Mathographics by Robert Dixon: https://store.doverpublications.com/0486266397.html And here are some Lewis Carroll mathematical puzzles (I had these when I was a teen--much fun!!): https://store.doverpublications.com/0486204936.html Or maybe some spherical trig? This book is one I've browsed quite a bit--one of my teens will be reading it after Christmas: https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691148922/heavenly-mathematics Hope you find the perfect gift!
