sheryl Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 Do you have one? Like it? Or, nah? I think I'd like one and have researched for probably too long now as I'm picky with features. There are certain sounds which appeal to me more than others and features like nightlight, usb/adapter vs. battery operated, auto off/timer, etc. If you have one do you use it? Quote
Corraleno Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 DS can't sleep without white noise and he's had a Dohm brand machine for years. I think I even got the original recommendation from the Hive! He still has the one we bought 7 or 8 years ago, and we bought a second one for his college apartment. It has a real fan inside instead of using electronic sounds on a loop. 1 Quote
mmasc Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 Another dome user here too. I take mine everywhere and can’t sleep without it! Sounds like a fan, which is the sound I like best for white noise. 1 Quote
Pawz4me Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 We have a Dohm and used it every night until I got to a certain age and hot flashes/night sweats started becoming a huge issue. I started sleeping with a floor fan aimed at me and we decided we liked that sound more than the Dohm. And so now the fan runs every night, even during the winter. But I've held on to the Dohm, too. 1 Quote
MercyA Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 (edited) I use a floor fan every night--can't sleep without it! If I'm traveling or if I move to the sofa to sleep, I play a fan noise mp3 on my phone, on repeat. Mine is called "Three Fans," I think, but there are lots of different ones available. That's me. My reason though for wanting a noise machine is for relaxation and enjoyment. I'm from the north originally and used to cooler temps. I sleep with a fan on me almost everyday of the year. Sunshine State Sue Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 I have 2 ancient (25+ year old) Sleep Mates. One in the bedroom and one in my office to block out the sirens, barking dogs next door, screaming children next door. 2 Quote

I know my Sleep Mates will die one day... 1 Quote

If you can tell us what kind of phone you have (iPhone or Android) and what app you use to listen to music (if any), maybe someone who knows what they are doing can chime in and help! 1 Quote
klmama Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 FWIW, one of my dc uses the Echo device to listen to rain sounds. If you have one of those, you can choose what sound you listen to; it might worth trying before buying a machine specifically for sleep. 1 Quote

I have an Android. I have some choir learning CDs that I have managed to stick in the old computer (new one has no CD drive), somehow get on the computer, then somehow copy to my phone. I have a long list of instructions I follow to do that. It won't let me rename anything so it's kind of a guess when I want to listen to one of them as the names they use may or may not be accurate. I use Google Play Music. Of course, now, it says I have to connect to the internet. WTH? Probably never mind. It's not really worth the hassle. 1 Quote
sheryl Posted November 20, 2020 Author Posted November 20, 2020 I need to rethink this. DH said to create a playlist and play from laptop. That's a good idea but I don't have a bedside table to accommodate a laptop b/c the table is already full of things. I also don't want to "have" to turn off the playlist. Oh well..... DH's idea would be free. I could use my earbuds and listen on my phone but I don't want to do that. I'd like the sound machine that has a timer and will go off automatically. Problem is the reviews. When I see one I like and I think I offered links above, the negative reviews were pretty negative even though overall the ranking for the unit is high b/c more people like it than don't. Quote
Laura Corin Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 I run a humidifier every night at present. White noise plus a less welcoming environment for respiratory viruses. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/experts-reveal-optimise-heat-humidity-reduce-covid-transmission/ 3 Quote
