Anyone not do leggings at all?  I used to have several legging type pants back in the early 90s that I wore with tunic sweaters.  I had a teen son of a friend of mine tease that I was a “sweater” girl back then when he saw my 90s picture.  So every time I try on a pair, I think “sweater girl”.  Skinny jeans? Sure!  Leggings? Not so much.

well, skinny jeans won't work for yoga 🙂

Well, for me, it's less outfits, lol. Put on the leggings in the morning, and I'm ready for yoga in the afternoon 🙂

This is me since the pandemic hit.  When I went to the gym, I'd change.  But the only way any working out is ever going to get done at home is if I'm already wearing workout clothes, so it's my new 'uniform', lol.

I tutor live kids on my porch twice a week.  I'll admit to getting 'dressed up' in non-workout clothes for them.  Because it's my only excuse to wear real clothes!  But I've been wearing my workut leggings to grocery shop...  I have ceased to care.

which leggings do you have? Looks like the Elevate and the salutation are the same material, but the salutation has more seams? Which means more shaping? And Salutation you can get with pockets?

I read up a bit and I would much rather support Athleta than Lululemon as far as the business themselves.

Here are the ones I've ordered recently (not specifically these colors). I LOVE THEM ALL!!!! I'm wearing the Stellar Tights right now, in fact. 😅 I haven't tried the Elation tights because I *need* pockets and the side seams don't bother me at all (in fact, lookswise, I prefer it to the smooth sides). I love the Athleta business model - it's very big on female empowerment in positive ways. ♥

These are less "athletic-tight looking" tights I've purchased recently:

Delancey Street Tight: https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=597889012#pdp-page-content

Delancey Gleam Tight: https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=631745002

Delancey Moto Tight: https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=598323022

Stellar Tight: https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=870815072

Peak Hybrid Tight (if you're in warm weather - no need for these, lol!): https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=511126002

Athletic Looking Tights (I have each of these in a lot of different colors):

Ultimate Stash Tight: https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=567465012

https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=599739002

Can you compare the Ultimate Stash to the Salutation Stash? Looks like they are different fabric, I'd love a comparison as far as feel, if one is hotter than the other (Florida!), more comfy, compression, etc. I need to be able to move and bend to do yoga, but also want them to somewhat minimize my mother's apron pooch.

I don’t wear leggings in public. Even with Tunics. They don’t feel like real pants to me, and they don’t feel modest. They’re for exercise and pajamas. If I exercise at the gym I wear sweatpants, which I’ll wear in public for exercise and to the store afterwards but I still prefer jeans or structured pants.

i do wear skinny jeans with tunics or longer shirts .

I wonder if this is in part due to climate - as far as what feels like "dressed for public"? When you grow up wearing shorts 90% of the year like we do in hot, humid Florida, and bathing suits fairly often too,  leggings feel like plenty of clothing in comparison - in that leggings and a tunic are no less modest than shorts and a shirt.

But if you grow up wearing jeans/pants most of the time, i could see how leggings might feel more revealing than that.

I think it’s less climate and more how I was raised. We get temps in the high 90s/low 100s often in the summer ( but it’s a dry heat!). Lots of people wear shorts. Lots of people wear leggings. My dad is like a lot of the older men around here, long sleeved button down shirt year round and jeans always. He only recently began wearing tennis shoes because of foot problems. Until then it was cowboy or work boots.

He tells a story about wearing sandals and shorts, running through the pasture when he was about 5. He tripped, skinned up his knees, stubbed his toes, and never wore shorts or sandals again.

I did wear shorts often as a kid, and leggings once in awhile. I wear shorts only occasionally now.  i am very used to the feeling of jeans, since most of my life they’ve been my preferred bottom half clothing. I think leggings don’t offer the resistance that Gives the sensory feedback to my legs saying I’m dressed. Objectively, I feel with a tunic they’re  as modest as skinny jeans with a tunic, but I was going to wear them out of the house that way once and couldn’t feel comfortable with it.

Also like my dad, I like the protection jeans offer from the abrasive world. Leggings snag and tear, as does the skin under them.

My sister grew up in the same climate, with the same parents, but she wears leggings.

Ah, well it's that hot here in the winter, lol. And humid. Jeans end up soaked in sweat and sticking to you since it is too humid for any sweat to actually evaporate into the air- gross! There is not much less comfortable than wet, clammy denim sticking to your skin. (for context, it is currently 83 degrees, humidity is 77%, so the "feels like/heat index" is 89 degrees. In mid November.

ooooohhhh, well. I'm not sure if I could tell the difference between them anymore without looking really closely! I have them in so many of the same colors mixed in with other styles in the drawers. 😏 I will pull some out this weekend and compare to the website to see if I can figure out which is which!

I don’t baby my one pair of Athleta leggings at all. They go through the regular wash with jeans and whatever else, and regular dryer cycle, too. Maybe they would last longer if I did, but I just don’t have the bandwidth in life right now to do that.

Same. I have several of their tennis skirts.

I bought Lu Lu leggings when I went travelling in Europe.

I used them as long underwear in the alps, plenty of times and PJ's, and as tights under dresses and skirts... and, yes, I wore them multiple times between washing. I paid for them because I really needed them to be perfect, and we were not carrying anything extra on that trip. Perfectly wicking in their role as long johns for the alps, perfectly nude-feeling in their role as PJ's for itchy sheets, and perfectly on trend for times when I needed to be dressy. (They were, and still are.)

I got a pair for me, plus one for each daughter. That was some price shock, I tell you!

I don’t have any Lu Lus but this would be what I would buy them for too.

I think the benefit of expensive leggings over “regular” ones is they will hold up well for years, they look smooth and don’t go see-through on stress points, don’t pill, and are really, really versatile as part of a capsule wardrobe. I do have a pair of Spanx jeggings and they look really good.

  • 2 weeks later...

So...I went to the mall and tried on both Athleta and Lululemon leggings.

Athleta were very nice. Lululemon had some that were AMAZING. I loved both the Align and the Wunder Under in Full on Luxtreme. Align shows EVERY bump but feels like wearing...angel wings or something. Or like wearing nothing. The full on Luxteme wunder under were a bit more flattering and still super comfy, waist didn't roll or move, etc.

The next best I've found are the Old Navy Elate ones, but they can't compare. Of course, buying them on sale for $15 or less, compared to about $90 for Lululemon....yeah. I was dearly hoping for a good black friday sale at lululemon but the stuff I want doesn't seem to be on sale, or isn't in stock in my size, or only in an ugly olive green. Boo. Might get one pair for Xmas, not sure which one I will get.

And..I just ordered an $88 pair of leggings. And..I don't feel guilty.

I was finishing a 90 plus minute "Burn" DDP Yoga class a week ago, and as I melted into a puddle on my mat I realized...this is why women buy expensive leggings - because they DESERVE IT gosh darn it!

I've now done at least 30 minutes of exercise daily for over 40 days, including one yoga workout a day and some cardio. I'm buying my fancy pants!

My girls love their Lulus - they are rather good about not putting them in the dryer. Take care of them and they will last and look new for a long time. I have one pair that are shorter than capris. I wear athletic shorts when I work out at home and often on walks. It just got cold enough for me to wear full-length leggings, and I have decided that I must have pockets in my leggings. Costco had some that are long enough with pockets so that is what I am wearing now.

Now can we solve the athletic bra issue!

That's the only thing I don't love about the Lulus...no pockets. But, most of the time I'm home, so really don't need them. The Athleta Ultimate Stash pockets were nice, but not as nice as the Lulus. The Old Navy Elevate High Rise have versions with pockets, so I did gte some of those for when I really want a pocket.

Actually has anyone here that sews made their own leggings?  They seem like they could be reasonably easy?

My mom has made some for my girls.  She said they were easy, but not super easy to make remotely because you don't always have a great idea of exactly how stretchy something will be on a body.  Things don't always stretch exactly the way you would predict.

I've made a couple pairs for my daughter using this tutorial.

I have had mixed results depending on exactly how the fabric held up. Sometimes it has worked perfectly. But other times, using very similar fabrics, when any stress is put on the seam, particularly the crotch seam, all the thread holes stretch very big until you can clearly see polka dots of underwear color through. Not ideal.

Since we are not looking for any particular trend or fashion, and just about any leggings will fit DD's little 5 year old body, I've found that it is just cheaper to buy mass market or thrift store leggings rather than investing in high enough quality fabric to successfully sew them myself.

Last month, though, DD was really into wearing Halloween pants, and I did have success buying some bat and witch patterned women's leggings I found at the thrift store and upcycling that fabric to sew leggings for her.
