MEmama Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 I want to put together a box of Irish foods/fun items for DS for the holidays. Everything has to be ordered, so ideally I’d like to shop at the fewest places as possible. He’s mostly vegetarian but not strictly so. What are the essentials to include? Bonus points for keeping it silly and fun. He’s 17 and making plans... 🙂 Quote
Kareni Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 Here is an Irish tea gift basket that might give you some ideas. Link ETA: more goodies here. Regards, Kareni 1 Quote

Regards, Kareni I know Irish food is notoriously bad, but not so bad that Lickable Treats cat food should be included on the list 😄 1 1 Quote

I didn't notice it when I posted the link. But, who knows, Irish cats might love it. Regards, Kareni 1 Quote

The Cadburys were an English Quaker family. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cadbury The McVities were Scottish https://mcvities.co.uk/about You could still include both if they are popular in Ireland though. 1 1 Quote

I figured they weren't truly Irish creations .... but my mind kept going to potato dishes .... and alcoholic Irish products 😂 1 Quote

wintermom Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 (edited) What do you mean/what is the purpose? Do you mean traditional Irish foods that your ds enjoys and that can be shipped? Is your ds going to Ireland. I feel like I'm missing some important link in this thread. These are some food-related things I found memorable from my visit to Ireland: - Soda bread, - French fries (even the KFC ones were somehow amazing) - Irish alcohol (probably not going to be appropriate for a 17 yo), Guinness, Irish Mist, Irish Whiskey TBH, the food was NOT memorable. I'm really struggling. There are a ton of great things about Ireland, though. Food just isn't what made my visit there amazing. What I REALLY loved was: - the people, their sense of dry humour, their accent, their story-telling ability - Irish sweaters, Celtic designs on pretty much anything - the landscape - it's SO GREEN, no wonder it's called the Emerald Isle - the ocean (I'm from inland, so this was very special for me, it probably won't be as big for your ds) - I also enjoy Irish music and dance, but I didn't actually experience it during my trip there. It is definitely available there, though Edited November 10, 2020 by wintermom 1 1 Quote

It is definitely available there, though DS has been accepted into his program at one of his top choice Irish universities, and even though he’s waiting to accept the offer I thought it would be fun to put together a few Irish goodies as a celebration. I have to wait on the sweatshirt until he decides where to go, lol, but food is always appreciated. 🙂 We've been and obviously love the country. 🙂 6 Quote

If he likes cheese, I can get Kerry cheese from Ireland in my local grocery stores. They are very tasty. You could make some soda bread, sweet or savory. 1 1 Quote
