So, ds lost a filling and then our old dentist closed down.

I got him in to a new dentist (of course with a wait time because we were new patients) and then the day before the appointment he got COVID and we had to reschedule. In the interim the tooth evidently got infected, badly (ds has a crazy high pain tolerance and likes to not keep me informed and when I called to reschedule I told them I needed in as soon as possible). Now new dentist says that he needs a root canal and crown for the tooth (molar). After we get the infection down, hopefully next week if the antibiotics do the trick. It seems crazy a root canal for a 16 year old but one of the reasons I picked this dentist is because I know several people that use him and vouch that he is not one to do work needlessly. Anyone have a 16 year old need a root canal????

Both of my kids have had root canals ( no enamel on the baby teeth for one and an freak issue). One was 7 and the other 8.  No issues at all.  The one kid has an extremely high pain tolerance and actually didn’t know his tooth was that bad.  It just hurt a little.

I had a root canal done in 9th grade when I was 14. I got dizzy and fell while in school and broke my front tooth (top middle). I am now 47 and that tooth is still doing ok.

I had to go on a liquid diet for a few days every time I had a root canal done.

I had a root canal when I was 9 or so. It did fail this year (I was 35), but that's partially my own darn fault for not getting a crown for it and also not going to the dentist enough (we had a baby and moved cities and started homeschooling, but apparently those aren't good reason to miss dentist appointments, lol.)

But either way, it lasted a good long while.

Sounds like an obvious solution. I had one and slept through it. Occasionally there are advantages to being hyporesponsive for sensory, lol.

The worst part is the cost really. Just do it.

Hi Soror! I am a dentist, and yes, unfortunately, I have seen teeth that need root canal treatment in 16 year olds. If the tooth is infected, really the only way to save the tooth is with root canal treatment. I hope he feels better soon!

My 16 year old son had to get a root canal when he was 15.  He had no pain but somehow the tooth had been injured and he had no idea how.  I suspect a fight he got into with his twin brother.  They would play rough like boys will do and sometimes one would get a bloody nose or whatever. Just boys being boys but that's the only thing I could think of that may have happened.  The tooth was starting to discolor but he seriously had no clue what happened.  None of us realized it until he went in for a regular cleaning.

I fell while roller skating when I was 6 and broke my front tooth in half. I got my first root canal on it when I was 9, and another, more extensive one when I was 19. The tooth, with crown, was then fine for about 10 years, but in the last 10 years, it has started getting looser and looser in my gum. Just this month I had it extracted as the first step toward getting an implant. Obviously getting a root canal that young wasn't ideal, but it was the best option, and it really only amounted to a bit of short term discomfort and inconvenience.

I had one who had a root canal at six. (broken tooth, abscesed)  They were trying to save the baby tooth.  Then it developed an abscess again, and had to be pulled anyway.  The concern was spacing when it would be at least a couple (more) years before grown up tooth would come in.

It's not as big an issue with a kid as with an older adult.

I had two root canals at around 18 following a bike accident.  It wasn't too big of a deal.  One of those teeth finally gave out after 25 years and I replaced it with an implant.

Thank you all for sharing, I'm feeling better about this now. Fingers crossed in a week the infection is down enough to proceed and get this crap over with. Thanks COVID!

Seems cavity drilled too deep exposed nerve now says root canal needed. Dentist says because young pulp larger closet to tooth surface.

My daughter was just told she needs root canal because root was exposed during routine cavity. obviously exposed by dentist. Left my daughter in pain for weeks. My daughter is 16. I’ve seen damaged teeth taken care of this way. But never this way. Has anyone else had this issue?
