Meriwether Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 I'm trying to help my daughter figure out what they are looking for here. What website or app she has used the most? We aren't Luddites, exactly, but we were really slow to add technology to our school except for Dd17's Lukeion classes. Maybe they are asking what app or website helps her succeed?) I'm much more comfortable listening to my 6 year old read than helping my daughter navigate things like this. Quote
Lori D. Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 (edited) What is this essay for? College application? Scholarship application? Practice prompt for the ACT? An essay test question for a specific class? Writing assignment for a class? That is what I would delve into first -- audience of the essay, and purpose for the essay. Meriwether Posted October 26, 2020 Author Posted October 26, 2020 It is a scholarship essay - for the highest scholarship the school she wants to attend offers. It is important we get it right. LOL I doubt they would like "I don't really use apps and websites for my school." Quote
forty-two Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Ideas: *Libby app (library ebook app) *Any sort of online journal archive (I use my dh's alumni access to a theology journal archive a lot for research) *NYT or other newspaper website Might work better to list out all the apps/websites she *does* use (regardless of the reason), list why she uses them, and think about what connection those activities have to either learning ("scholar") or accomplishing things with people ("leadership"). If there's any app/website she's particularly passionate about, it might be worthwhile thinking about how to connect whatever that app/site contributes to her life to learning/accomplishing, instead of trying to shoehorn some semi-random conventional app/site into more conventional scholar/leader things. My best guess re: the essay topic is that they are trying to see how she uses technology/internet to do real, useful things - kind of an integration of tech and (productive) life. 2 Quote
Sebastian (a lady) Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 Are there any less common sites she uses? One of my kids had a couple online resources for Latin. Java code test site 3D design or printing software (Tinkercad, Cura, Blender, Skyciv) Khan Academy Specific YouTube channels I could even make a case for something like iTunes or Spotify. 1 Quote
teachermom2834 Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 I just asked my ds, who I would say doesn't use many apps for school, what he would answer and he said either "reminders" or the app he uses to scan and submit things. (I forget the name of the one he uses but I use Turboscan for the same purpose). He said he would use that as a setup to discuss homeschooling or his academic style and goals. He would basically pick an app and then segue into something that he really wanted to talk about that would tell more about him that he wanted to highlight. He is glad to not have that question on the scholarship application he is working on. 1 Quote
