I grew my bangs out this year, after having bangs for all my adult life. I still want them to grow longer because I can’t put them in a ponytail and have it reliably stay. I have a problem, though, that I don’t know how to solve. I can’t seem to keep my bang swoop from falling down in my face; within several minutes it starts falling down, even with gel and hairspray and directional styling. (See photos)

In the current situation, I *have* to use a clip, headband or top partial ponytail to keep my hair from driving me mad. Lots of people do their hair this way; what am I missing?

(I don’t think these appear chronologically, but the one without a bang in my face is the first one, then 20 minutes later, then I gave up.)

What about using two Bobbie pins crossed over each other (in an x) just to hold back that swoop?

Having hair in my face drives me bonkers.

I’m gonna try that, thanks!

Side note: when I was watching the Vice Presidential debates I was fixated on Senator Harris’ bang swoop. It stayed perfectly still  all night. It never moved! I was like, “What sorcery is this? I need to know!” Other people were fixated in The Fly, but I was mesmerized by her hair!

I grew out my bangs when I went to college and my boyfriend (now husband) rejoiced, because they were the fluffy 80's kind! No more getting poked in the face for him!

Honestly, I think you just need about two or three more inches of growth before they're going to stay out of your face better. Bobby pins to the rescue!

It probably goes without saying, but you look fab!!!

LOL! You probably don't want that heavy of hair spray application in real life!

True! I don’t really like hair spray at all, in fact. I was going to try it if my hair would stay, though!

Tuck them behind the ear with two bobby pins per side and a squirt of hairspray.  I've had the best luck doing that when I kept it in kind of a low ponytail style while they were growing out.

(Such pretty hair!)

When I grew out my bangs a few years ago, I used a Buff, but that's probably not the look you're going for.

I did use a Buff all during the past several months since I didn’t go out much and it’s fine for at home appearance. It was perfect for pushing that just-a-bit-too-long bang out of the way. Now I’m aiming for something that looks styled/dressier but still won’t drive me bonkers all day, lol.

Aww, thank you!

I have my hair like this right now and I like it. This might be my solution, at least until a few more inches grow. I like that the bobby pins more or less blend in. I mean, it’s still obvious that there is something clipped in my hair, but it is a better solution than my barrette-clips which are so (intentionally) noticeable.

I know.  Your hair is beautiful.   That is not how I looked growing out my bangs.    I was going to say Bobby pins too.  I had the same thoughts during the debate about Harris.

Can you take a few strands and put them in a mini elastic in the back, in a way that’s not too tight or uniform?

It will grow soon.

There may be a way to do this that looks nice though so far, I haven’t managed to do it in a way that pleases me. I have pulled just the bang section back in a tiny elastic, which seems to make my face look long that way. It’s different and I don’t think I like it much. It does solve the hair-in-face problem, though.

On tv I think answer is heavy hair spray!

When your swoop gets longer it may join with the part that curls back at lower ear level and stay better than now .

Also if it was in bangs it will be used to going forward — if you keep it back for awhile including possibly with a headband after washing and let it dry back, it will probably get progressively “trained” toward going back.

Meanwhile clip or Bobby pins

I have hair just like yours. A close friend in high school always had the perfect swoop and I interrogated her about it one day. She said it was a cowlick and she HATED it. She went on for a good 10 minutes about how she’d die to pull off any other hair style and have it look right.

One thing I did besides clips when I was growing out bangs was hairstyles that involved twists. Like a french braid, a sort of half victory roll, even one of those milkmaid type of twists away from my face. But mostly barrettes and bobby-pins.

I'm growing out my bangs and they are just a tiny bit shorter than yours right now. Mine are chin level if I strasighten them out so they are curling below lip level. This is usually when I give up & cut them!

I have the Goody clips just 1 size larger than the ones @fairfarmhandlinked. Small Goody claw clips. If I'm trying to look nice, that's what I do. Otherwise, I pull everything back in a high pony tail, do a small partial pony, or wear a buff (but this is my LAST resort because I look bad in them). I am not a hair gel/spray person. And my bobby pins are left over from when my girls were little, so... Not sure how many I have or if I could actually get the x thing to work.

I WANT to be sad for you, but your hair is just too fabulous and I’m just jealous. I’m guessing someone with fine hair put a curse on you and it took.

LOL, I was just thinking something along those lines.  If I had hair that gorgeous, I wouldn't give a hoot where it hung!

Lol! My mom had thick, nice hair and all of us kids inherited it, which in turn passed down to my kids, too. During the shutdown, when I got called on to pinch-hit hair maintenance for my husband and sons, I was combing out my older son’s long hair and was thinking, “Wow, this is literally exactly like my own hair.” His hair is exactly the thickness and waviness and same color as mine (well. No grey. But my color before coloring grey.)

Good hair genes run strong here.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned. I just can't read all the replies.

It looks like you have thick hair. I would have your bangs  thinned out. You'll need a hairdresser for this. They need to be lighter and layered slightly, and then they will stay off your face and out of your eyes so much.

I love the look you have with long bangs! It is really nice with your face shape.

Hope this helps a little.

I use the ever-stylish and classic Goody snap clip.

You can do it really loose but it still stays, and doesn't show much. Like you would just clip the very end, and the bang swoosh over your face would basically stay the same, it just wouldn't fall in your face.

My mother has thick, wavy, Auburn hair. My daughter has the same hair. It’s the kind of hair that does whatever you need it to do. Guess who got skipped?!? I’ve got baby fine, coppery red, frizzy-ringlety hair. Sometimes it looks really nice, but I don’t get a lot of say in when this happens.
