If the preferred prey are rodents, it isn't likely to go too wrong, right?

As long as they stick with rodents, then I don't see a downside.  But it's 2020.  I'm imagining baboons riding wolves riding into Addis Ababa.

In our recent vacation in South Dakota, I learned from a ranger that badgers and coyotes also hunt together prairie dogs at times.  I don't know if it was one particular coyote that developed this relationship since the ranger talked about a specific area (but we were asking where we could see a badger so that may be why he was directed us to that place).

If the wolves only eat rats, I wonder why they are targeted by farmers.

Because the farmers likely don't know that. And if they see wolves wandering in the pasture with their cattle, they may not be willing to take a chance and figure out if the wolves REALLY only eat rats.
