gardenmom5 Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 I also posted pictures on the "essentials before cat" thread. He looked like he was going to fall asleep leaning against Dudeling's bed. (he had been climbing through the bars, grabbing the post, and just finding it a great toy. 1ds commented, you know Dudeling loves the kitten when he willingly allows his picture to be taken. 1ds, and 2ds are smitten as well. PS - what's your favorite kitten food? 15 3 Quote
stephanier.1765 Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 What a sweetie pie! Kittens, I love kittens! We use Purina One dry kitten food and Friskies wet kitten food. Boy, do ours love that wet food. She runs around the house like an excited dog when I prepare it for her. Enjoy that sweet baby! 1 Quote
sweet2ndchance Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 (edited) We use Meow Mix Grain Free. She was being fed the cheap store brand when we got her. Her coat went from "meh" to beautiful when we started giving her the grain free food. Our dog is on grain free food as well so we figured we better get grain free cat food as well since there was a chance the dog might get into her food and the dog is allergic to corn. And the Meow Mix Grain Free isn't but a dollar or two more than than the regular cat foods. We've given her wet food a couple of times, just whatever is on sale. She doesn't seem to prefer it over dry food like most cats I've owned/known. But she definitely let's us know when her dry food bowl is empty lol. Congrats on your cute little kitty! Laurie Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 Cute pictures! Tell your son he's going to have a full-time job making sure the kitty doesn't get stuck somewhere while he's being curious. And if you have any reclining furniture, tell everyone in the house to make sure the kitten isn't underneath when they try to recline. Keep an eye on the dog visitors so they don't eat the kitty litter...some dogs find it irresistible, with or without kitty poop. I also remember when someone here was asking about bottom freezer refrigerators one time and someone said to watch out for small animals when you pull out the freezer drawer because if they're quick they can get inside while the drawer is pulled out. I was glad that our dog and cats were already big when we got ours because I never even considered the possibility! Enough safety talk. Have a great time with the cute little guy! 1 1 Quote

That might have been one of the things that enticed them into Dudeling's room today. The door got shut behind them, so we thought someone had actually shut them up, but we now think they did it to themselves. Because the kitten is so small, and sleeping in dudeling's room - his kibble is in there as well as a small litter box. (the litter box is actually in a med dog crate with the door open.) He's learning that he has to clean it a minimum of once a day. I did watch the kitten climb over a 5" tall wall of cardboard - so I feel better than he can get into one of the higher side litter boxes. Dudeling found a plastic bag that had been ripped in his room - so he came upstairs to open the bag of kibble I purchased (but was thinking of taking back. They'll still take it as they have 'satisfaction guaranteed" - the kitten won't eat it so far.) Apparently - the dogs ate the kibble in his room. One is known for stealing food if he can find it. His food intake has to be controlled. (they get fed in the am and the pm, and don't really get snacks. Maybe a kong with something in it.) Quote
BeachGal Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 (edited) Oh my! What a gorgeous kitten! ❤️ Just a few more safety tips to add. 1. Watch to see if kitty chews on strings, earbud cords, shoe laces, fringes, etc. If so, you’ll want to keep anything string-like hidden or tucked away. String that’s eaten can cause serious intestinal problems. 2. Kittens often zig-zag in front of people as they walk. Don’t want to step on the little guy or trip over him. As for food, my son started his cats on Hill’s Science Diet for kittens. Chicken flavor. They also eat Primal raw cat food and Wellness Complete canned cat food. He gets the frozen raw food from Kriser’s and orders the rest from Chewy.com. One of them also likes Bonito flakes and silver vine sticks which come from Amazon. Both like catnip. If you call his name when it’s time to eat or do something he likes, he’ll very likely respond eventually. Some cats can be trained to do even more but it might take time. You can try wiping the kitten down with wet wash cloths to help reduce the allergens. A few times each week or daily. Just make sure kitty has a spot where he can warm up afterward. Martha Stewart’s cats get dipped up to their shoulders in buckets of warm water. Maybe her website has a short video. I used to do this with my former cat. The key was to have everything ready so that she wasn’t too stressed. Then afterward, she went into a small room that was warmed up with a heater, maybe around 80 degrees, while I dried her off using fresh towels. She hated the hair dryer so I just used towels and a very warm room. She seemed to like being cleaned up. It was like her spa day. 😄 I hope all goes well as the kitten transitions in. Looks like your son has already bonded to him! Edited October 12, 2020 by BeachGal 2 Quote

Looks like your son has already bonded to him! The warm room is a good idea. I bought dudeling a tower fan because he's always hot - and since I have done projects in the garage in the winter I bought one that also heats. We're going to try doing the "bath/spa" thing. I found some silicon gloves with nibs people use to massage/bath their pets. Even people with cats said they loved them. It also helps get dead hair. I got a bag of Wellness one kibble - he doesn't seem to like it, but was only offered it tonight. . . but he had been eating food with fish. (both kibble and canned). I have some icky smoked salmon (someone bought this particular one as an experiment. I'm very picky about my smoked salmon. But good smoked salmon . . swoon.) I can give that stuff that's been sitting in my freezer to him. He'll love it. great for training treats . . . Quote
