After 20 years, I am finally going to retire my dansko clogs. RIP

I want to buy a new pair of shoes to wear to school. I am on my feet for the majority of the day and every half hour throughout the school day, I speed walk through the building to drop off/pick up students. This is great for the activity level and step count, but hard on my feet.  Suggestions for super comfy shoes? My danskos were ok, but my feet still hurt at the end of the day. I don't need fancy - I'm usually in jeans. Maybe not sneakers though?

Am I looking for a shoe unicorn?

Arcopedico shoes are my all-time favorite. They're made in Portugal and are amazingly comfy - better than any other brand I've ever tried. Zappos has a large selection of them.

Where do your feet hurt at the end of the day? Are you needing a more supportive arch? More cushioning all over?

How old were your Danskos? Are you retiring them because you've been wearing the same pair for 20 years or because you are done with the clog style?

If you are typically in jeans, I would absolutely be looking at sneakers. In looking at staff at my kids' schools, the majority of them wear sneakers if they are in jeans.

Mostly my heels hurt. They just feel tired, if that makes sense. No stabby pains or anything.

Danskos are 20 years old - same pair. 😳 I looked at them this year when I pulled them out of the shoe tub and saw that the little staples around the bottom are totally rusted. And then I tried to remember when I bought them. It was 1999 I think! So I'm not anti-dansko, just thinking they've overstayed their welcome and want more cushioning.

I wear jeans a lot - although I'll do dressier pants from time to time as well.

I would go with anything Merrill. They've saved my feet many times over the last three decades.

I think you're smart for taking care of your feet.

Oh, I forgot about Merrills- those are comfy. @math teacher do FitFlops make something other than flip flops? I'm going to need something that can work in very cold temps and though I love my flip flops, I can't wear them all winter. I'll check out the Arcopedios and the Dansko sneakers too!

Thanks!!!

If you don’t need the arch support from the Dansko, I urge you to try some cushy running shoes.  Some of them come in plain black, which might be more workmanlike.  Personally I love Altra Torins, and they are undeniably very cushy, plus my toes have room to spread out in them, which is completely unique in my experience.  However, they are not suitable for walking on rocky surfaces or broken asphalt—they are great for indoor surfaces and sidewalks/roads or soft dirt paths, but are considered road running shoes.  I use them around town a lot, but for trails I use trail runners.

If you have to have dressier shoes, the brands I like other than Dansko are Earthies (very cushy, not much arch support), Bjorn (both), and Sofft (both but less supportive).  None of those have the rock solid arches that Dansko does though.  For that, in a dress shoe, the only alternative I have found is the Walking Company’s in house brand, Abeo.

You may just have a cushioning issue—shoes do break down with wear!!

Try a pair of Sketchers Go Walks...they will only last a few years, but the overall cushioning is really fantastic.

It's funny, I buy a new pair of Reef flip flops at the start of every summer because by the end of the summer, they start to feel worn down. It just didn't occur to me to replace the Danskos for the same reason! I think because they held up so well on the outside, that it felt wasteful to retire them. But I bet on the inside, they're just less cushy now.

I don't think I need arch support? I can walk around in flip flops for months with no problem. I'll check out Altra's too. I have annoying feet that aren't quite wide but aren't quite not-wide, so I tend to look for regular shoes with a bit of extra width near the toes.

The Altras are narrow in the heel and wide in the toes, which is awesome for me.
