Terabith
PetSmart has tubes of "hairball lubricant for cats" that has worked pretty well for us. It's vaguely fish flavored, I think.  1
Spy Car
Mrs Spy Car has been talking about getting a cat (or a turtle, or bees, or seemingly any creature that can fill the hole) lately, and--in what I believe is a transparent attempt to get some "buy in" on my part (that of a non-cat-person)--she's been reading me items from cat blogs that claim a link between hairballs and feeding cats carbohydrates, and how hairballs can be eliminated on a raw diet. Never claim my wife doesn't know her man  Is there anything to it? I dunno. Bill
katilac
Frequent brushing makes the biggest difference. We've never been able to get our cats very interested in licking the hairball remedy stuff. When they occasionally do, it doesn't seem to make a difference, but maybe they need it more regularly to work.
City Mouse
I have used a cat food that was formulated for hair balls. It seemed to help until my cat stopped eating it.
