We have choices to make.  We haven't been in a position to make such big choices for ourselves before; DH's work has made them for us in the past. Exciting times!!

If you live or have lived in Maryland, especially southern Maryland, did you like it there? We will be homeschooling and I feel pretty good about doing that there, but I'm wondering about the rest of life.

I love Maryland. I love it more at the moment with our current governor than I have at other times under different administrations. Southern MD is really beautiful, IMO. The Chesapeake is remarkable.

Maryland is very diverse. Central MD is the most diverse; southern, less.

Main downsides of MD: taxes are generally high, it is not retirement-friendly for this reason, traffic into Baltimore or DC is literally among the worst in the nation.

But we have incredible health facilities available here, several very good public colleges, diverse topography - beach? Check! Mountains? Check! Forests? Sure, why not. Great boulder-y hiking trails? Yup.

Also, we have the best state flag. Sorry, everyone else. We just do! 🙂

I live in MD as well and second this thread.  Minus the flag statement,  I have zero opinion about any states' flags.

We love Maryland. It is very very diverse though, and each area is different. Southern Maryland is very different if you mean St. mary's and south/east, versus Charles county versus PG county. It goes from city to suburbs to rural very quickly, with corresponding cultural differences in each area. The downside of southern/central MD for me is the weather. Annoyingly hot and humid in summer. Cold and wet in the winter, but rarely do we get snow (1-2x a year, some years no snow). The bugs are no joke either. We are in southern MD now but hope to retire to western MD for a better climate and traffic situation.

That’s true about the weather. Dd attended St. Mary’s College of Maryland and most times when we got snow, she got freezing rain and sleet. (Except when we all got a big blizzard.)

Very true about the rapid change in urban/rural and the cultural differences. 100% agree with that. There is also a shocking difference in economic advantage between areas that are just a couple miles apart. Or blocks apart in some cases, as in Baltimore city.
