Quote from the article:

One thing is clear to me, from reading these documents. American people do not seem particularly well-prepared for scams of this nature.

The emails between public officials and scientists, who were dealing with a difficult situation, seem efficient, professional, and appropriately cautious. But communication from the general public is concerning. People planted seeds even when expressly told not to. Hundreds of people had no idea whether they had ever ordered seeds, or how to check. Some people called 911. Others ate the seeds. Others ordered something specific, got what they ordered from who they ordered it from, then still panicked. Others were furious they had to pay for postage to send the seeds to the government. From one recipient in North Carolina: “I did not receive seeds. I received a suspicious package from China with a spoon and a fork in it my concerns are that it is full of Covid.”

They ate the SEEDS???  I thought they planted them and ate the veggies that grew.  But they ate the seeds.  That's bizarre.  And dumb.

We received seeds but they were ones we actually ordered.   And almost none of them sprouted.

A funny thing happened recently: I got a package in the mail with a return address I didn't recognize. I felt the package and it was lumpy, with a hard corner. I was like, "What in the world..." and was very suspicious. I actually thought about the seeds from China and wondered if this could be that. I gingerly opened the package, afraid something nefarious was going to fall out (Anthrax? Un-ordered seeds? I didn't know...)

When I opened the package, I still didn't know, because it was wrapped in tissue paper. But I did finally see my last name and then I came to realize it was a decorate-a-onesie kit for the upcoming Zoom baby shower!

No, that would at least be explicable, because presumably at that point you could ID it and know they weren't harmful.  And a lot of them were things like roses, mint, sweet potatoes, cucumbers...  They just ate the seeds all unknowing.

Frigging depressing.

At least you weren’t part of the Burpee failure this year. Almost everyone who planted burpee cucumbers, zucchini , and a few others all got pumpkins.  So many upset people on my garden group.

Well, they are all curcubits, right? SMH. I am sure people were irate; I would be.

I've gotten mislabeled seeds before, but thankfully it was just regular snapdragons mixed or instead of dwarf snapdragons. Not food I was planning to eat!

Man, and I was SO SURE you were ready to say the Putin Tower (in your neighbor's yard) had launched...

No, and I actually conversed with him briefly the other day, and he doesn't have any sort of accent and seemed perfectly reasonable.  Ya know, other than having a monolith turned lighthouse in his yard.

Pumpkins are good though you can store them through the winter!

Maybe Putin's brother has been planting those seeds. Maybe that's why their garden looks so nice.

No wait! Maybe Putin's brother has been the one mailing those seeds!
