GaHadley
I need an art curriculum for my 9th grader. She's dyslexic, so I don't want copious amounts of reading and writing, though some of each is expected. She's fairly creative and enjoys artsy things, so I'd like something that gets her creating some. I also need it to be at least almost entirely self directed, or minimally involve me if possible. What have y'all enjoyed that can count for high school credit? We were trying Drawing with the Right Side of the Brain, but she's not enjoying it and I don't have the time to invest in digesting it first and giving her the highlights so she can just do the projects.
mountains27
I just signed my 9th grade daughter up for a class at Outschool, it's called Drawing - A Fun Way to Improve Your Skills! (Jr/Sr. High). I have never tried Outschool before but I like the look of this class and that it is a flex schedule so she doesn't have to report to any online meetings. It is only a 6 week class I think so I'm not sure how much of a credit it will be but I figure it's a start and if she likes it and it works out I can just sign her up for another. alisoncooks
I'm looking at Virtual Art Instructor for my 9th grader. https://thevirtualinstructor.com/ They have some free content, or you can pay by the course, or a subscription. Khan Academy also has Art History content. It has videos and pictures -- not a lot of reading, from what I saw. Shoeless
What about Composition and Design from Ellen McHenry? It's free and worth 1/4 credit as is. If you add in more projects, she says you could count it for 1/2 credit.

Violet Crown
We hired a local graduate student in the Fine Arts Dept at Big State University who wanted experience teaching K-12 and was delighted to meet once a week to teach Middle Girl drawing. It was a wonderful experience for MG.

It was fantastic. We went through the curriculum(the basics) and then she worked through the topics. We bought the subscription.

I have it waiting for us on my book shelf. 🙂 I was thinking we would do the McHenry course every other week, alternating with the art class that DS12 takes every other week. Hunter
I just saw this free streaming video series while looking for something else. Art Through Time: A Global View, featuring thirteen half-hour programs, a guide, text, and other Web resources, takes a thematic approach to art history and appreciation. Rather than a linear chronology, the materials explore connections in Western and non-Western art, illuminating the breadth, complexity, and beauty of works produced around the world and at different periods of time. In each program focusing on a particular theme, a diverse group of leading experts, together with a living artist, contextualize and connect featured works from different cultures and eras. The Web site, guide, and text provide a variety of opportunities to learn more. https://www.learner.org/series/art-through-time-a-global-view/series-overview-2/ Edited October 2, 2020 by Hunter
