Carrie12345 Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 I may have asked this ages ago without retaining any input, or maybe I just thought about asking it and that’s why I can’t remember. Are there any super tips for relocating a litter box in a different part of the house? The last (and only) time I tried to do that, my cat and/or cats started peeing on the floor where the litter box had been. Sadly, more than once, people had put shoes in that spot. 😮 I think it was mostly the cat who passed away a few years ago, but I can’t be sure. The cat we still have is 14 years old and ornery. I’m very much afraid to try again, but the location we’ve been putting up with all this time is really inappropriate and our reason for having chosen that spot was due to where our big dogs’ crates were at the time, but they died years ago, too. I hate litter box life. Quote
Shellydon Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 I would put out a second litter box in the new place and leave both litter boxes available for up to 2 months. Once you see that the cat is using the second litter box regularly you can try removing the first. Make sure the second litter box doesn't require the cat to travel really far from where they normally hang out. For example the cat normally hangs out in the living area of the house, but you move the litter box to the basement. 1 Quote
Tanaqui Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 If you're really concerned then, in addition to what Shellydon said, you can try moving the old box incrementally closer to the new one. 2 Quote

Up to 2 months, eh? Maybe that was my problem the first go round. He does normally spend most of his time in the area closer to where I want it to go, so that’s good. But there’s no way to incrementally move it from one end of downstairs to the stairs on the other end of the house and up to the same end on the second floor, lol. Quote

Maybe I'm being dense, but -- why can't it be done? Distance and stairs are only relevant in that the longer the distance the longer it takes. Quote

RootAnn Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 So, I agree with the above, but I'd actually add *two* new boxes. One in the spot you want the new one to go & one on the same floor as the current box but in a spot that is convenient for it to stay permanently. I also agree it might take awhile, but I'd assume both new ones will stay when the old one eventually goes away. Quote

Where it is has been the best we’ve been able to do down there. Unless we want it in front of the couch for all of us to watch, lol. Quote
kiwik Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 I just moved it and showed them where it was. But the cat was young and adaptable not 14 and ornery. Quote
RootAnn Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 (edited) Cats don't care where they do their business. They don't care if you watch or don't watch. You might not want a litter box there, but the cats sure don't mind. ETA: adding a picture of the litter box we have by our front door. We covered a tote into a "drop in" litter box so there would be less spillage in our front room. Edited August 31, 2020 by RootAnn Added picture Quote
