klmama Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 While we'd all love a delicious treat for the first day of school, none of us will want to eat pastries or other sweet foods. Any ideas for a healthy and satisfying alternative? 1 Quote
MercyA Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Trail mix bar! Put out different kinds of nuts, seeds, banana chips, coconut, dried fruit, chocolate chips (if desired), etc. and let everyone make their own mix. Quick bread (pumpkin, zucchini, etc.) Special breakfast? Whole grain waffles or pancakes with real maple syrup? 1 Quote

There are plenty of fancy/special breakfasts that aren't sweet: shrimp and grits, eggs Benedict with toasted English muffins, sausage gravy with biscuits, frittatas, omelets, fancy fruit bowls, avocado toast, savory bread from the bakery. Fancy glasses for the juice or milk, tablecloth, decorations. 9 Quote
Storygirl Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 My family likes quiche, so I often make it for breakfast for the first day of school. It takes almost an hour to bake, so I make it ahead and reheat. 2 Quote
Frances Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Yogurt parfaits with plain Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, and granola or nuts. 2 Quote
Guest Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 (edited) Popovers. Man do I love a popover for breakfast, but very rarely make them because I have to get my slug-like self busy making a baked good early in the day. Edited August 30, 2020 by Quill Quote
Monica_in_Switzerland Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Often times presentation is a big deal to kids! What about fruit skewers? Or literally anything on a skewer? Rolled up lunch meat or cubed cooked chicken, cubes of cheese, olives, cherry tomatoes, pickles... Or a rainbow of veggie sticks with a favorite dip? 1 Quote
Monica_in_Switzerland Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Oh!!! My kids LOVE to make and eat sushi. We make it vegetarian or with cooked things (a little canned tuna or salmon mixed with enough mayo or spicy mayo to hold together a bit) so that we don't need to worry about food safety. 1 Quote

I'm very confused, never heard of these before! Quote
LMD Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Croissants, either French toast style or with ham and melted cheese. 🤤 Quote

Better Homes calls them, "crispy, hollow puffs" and likes them for appetizer, salad or main course. A few pages earlier they have French Breakfast Puffs, which are like for muffins without the fruit, but sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Yum, sweet, but not decadent. 2 Quote
EmilyGF Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Fruit salad with berries you don't normally buy and quiche (crustless if you are gluten-free). Emily 1 Quote

Hmmm, maybe like a choux pastry, like a savoury profiterole? Might try it tomorrow! 2 Quote

Pretty much like a choux pastry or a savory profiterole. If you put some butter or jam on straight out of the oven, it is like a food of the gods. 1 Quote
Carol in Cal. Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Cream scones with lemon curd. Or a really special cheese you would not normally buy that everyone loves. Quote
alisoncooks Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 We sometimes buy several "fancy cheeses" and make a charcuterie platter with pickles, crackers, olives. 1 Quote
